Odd that they're different. Maybe some tourist said, 'can I have one of each?'

We have a set just like these and they are also a mix of the two styles, so I assume they came that way (so you don't confuse your salt with your pepper?). I like them a lot too. Hand-carved tiki goodness.

It's been quite a while since I'd gone looking for goods so I decided to do it up right this weekend. Thursday, Saturday and Monday were devoted to scouring thrift shops, antique malls and flea markets in search of tiki. Here's what I found:

(Front) Coco Joes tiki pen holder, Coco Joes menehune carving a tiki figurine, tiki from Guam. (Back) Yet another Don Ho glass for the collection, a glass that says "Mogambo Bar-Cafeteria TEL 6323 CAMAGUEY," Sea World tiki coffee mug (actually got two of those).

Close up of the Coco Joe. I've never seen this one before. The tag says he's "Kuipeka" and he carved the tiki wiki wiki, with his magic knife.

Pair of paint by numbers.

My second R-12 in the past few months. Yet another TV menehune stir. My second small Polynesian Village goblet, these are smaller than the more commonly found ones. My second Quon Quon decanter in the past six months, but the other one I found was not as in as good a shape and was lacking the stopper. And then there's a neat souvenir plate in the back.

Carved mask from Tonga. Weird little bowl up front. Unmarked moai mug. Graphic Novel "Maui - Legends of the Outcast." It was published in New Zealand.

Close up of the weird bowl thing.

69 cents at Goodwill.

Here's where I really scored. Menus! I never find menus (well there was one a couple months ago...but besides that one). I scored a bunch at a flea market. These three are all from Disney Polynesian Village. They're OK, pretty plain. They do have inserts hawking mai tais and Navy grogs, but no pics.

Two from Trader Vics. The large one is dated 1970 but does not say which location it came from. The smaller one is a mail out menu from the St Petersburg Florida TV. I wonder if the larger one is from St Pete as well?

Even though it's a mini in size, it's still a full nine page menu.

Beef 'n Reef, Cocoa Beach Florida. Nice tiki inside. Aloha! I never heard of the place.

Dobbs House Tiki.

Love this menu!

Apparently a chain of polynesian restaurants.

Funny but true: I scored all these menus at a flea market that's over an hour drive away out in the country. I ask the guy if he's got a shop. Yes. Where? His shop is about 400, maybe 500 YARDS from where I live! Weird. He doesn't have any more menus, but he's got tens of thousands of postcards so maybe I can find some nice tiki PCs.

A pretty good weekend even without the menus, which were a very nice icing on the cake.

Wow Kono!
I'm so shocked and amazed at all the great items you scored! Congratulations!
It's great when you go out of your way to really hunt items down, and are rewarded.

I'm excited for you!

Ah, no biggie. It's like Basement Kahuna used to say, it's out there you just have to know where to look. And then get out there and actually look.

Hell, two/three weeks ago I kept visiting "Tiki Finds" and all I could think was "What? Has all the tiki been moved to Canada??"

I am stoked about the menus though.

YES! Those menus are just too cool for words!
I have not seen one yet, but give it time!
My persistence has to pay off at some point or another.

I imagine it would be very hard to find menus at thrift shops. Maybe at yard sales, but I don't do yard sales (too much frustration). For two years I've been asking antique stores "do you have menus?" and it has yielded one find. Flea markets seem to have a lot of folks selling paper collectibles and I always ask them if they have menus. Finally scored today.

Today I asked the vendors where they get their menus and they said that they have an ad in the Yellow Pages and it states that they buy paper collectibles and so people call them up. Plus they have a network of contacts. The guy told me he has a friend with a quarter million post cards in a warehouse!

Keep searching. I just don't get how there's so many menus on ebay but I never see them "in the wild." Maybe yard sales and estate sales are the answer.

Damn! I gotta move... The thrift stores around here look like they've been purged by the Tiki Taliban!

Kono - looks like you stumbled into a time warp to the old days of collecting! Nice finds.

That BEEF 'N REEF menu has me intrigued.

Looks like it might be another incarnation of the ISLANDER BEEF & GROG:

..Unless Tiki Steakhouses were common in Cocoa Beach? Kono, is there an address in your menu?

Sabu

No. No address, no telephone number. What's in the pics is pretty much all there is. The back of the menu is just bamboo pattern w/o any writing. Sorry to be of no help!

Wayne Coombs told me a few years ago that the Beef and Reef was a tiki restaurant that had a bunch of Leeteg paintings. He credits the place with helping to inspire his tiki carving. Nice menus Kono.

But wait, there's more!

I went out again today and found:

Two of these bamboo bar stools with a tapa like upholstery.

Three mugs from Hawaii Kai.

Maori carving.

Go Kono! Go Kono! Awesome mugs!

It's been dry for me this past 2 weeks, aside from a little Hawaiian tourist tiki and something that looks like a cross between a tiki, an alien and a conehead.

The tiki vortex is centered right over you. And you're in Florida....Hope that's not leading up to another hurricane.

I've been victimized by the tiki taliban! I went hunting yesterday and found---
Nothing!
Okay, I'm exaggerating a little. I did find an Arthur Lyman record-- Bahia. In pretty good shape, too. For 99 cents. I was pleased about that.
I'm really impressed with the great stuff everyone finds at their local thrift shops.
I'm thinking of moving.

I went to Columbus last weekend and knew I had to find a Kahiki mug at least. I found a lot, mostly over-priced. I refuse to buy one off Ebay. They are too common. I found one once before. But $10-20 is a bit much too. This is as fine a cast as I have ever seen.
