Hi

Just thought I would show you my all time favorite Tiki ever.

This one is by Dean Hetherington and is carved in the very traditional style of one of the South Island Iwi. It is carved from West Coast Pounamu (new Zealand Nephrite jade)
It is nearly 6 inches long, 3 inches wide and .75 inches thick weighing in at a hefty 12.5oz (350grams)
I have been involved in traditional Maori carving for 30 years and have never seen one as nice as this one which came from a friends personal collection. When it arived the original cord had worn through so I made and fitted a new cord and bindings to finish it off.
This Tiki has now been sold to a lady in Australia and believe me it was extraordinarily hard to let it go. I regretted selling it the moment she said she wanted it.

Don

I was out wandering around at lunch today and stopped by the local flea market to check things out. Friday is usually a pretty slow day and I don't find much.

After being skunked for about five weeks on my Friday flea market lunches, I walked up to a table and found these things.

This was the first item I found. There were a box full of travel items and I found these Hawaii-The 50th State cocktail napkins.

Behind the box of paper goods was this.

A Brallata decanter and two glasses. I already have one set, but what intrigued me about this one was it had the box. The decanter does not fit in the box, which leads me to believe another bottle was in the box with the glasses.

A picture of the box. The box holds the two glasses and according to the box should have a "Half Pint 84 Proof bottle of Brallata Demi-Sec Liqueur Product of Italy and Bottled for Liqueur Specialties Co. So. San Francisco, Calif.

Behind some other liquor bottles I spied this.

Trader Vic's Mai Tai Rum decanter.

And his buddy.

Another Trader Vic's Mai Tai Rum decanter.

With the labels on the back.

And their companions.

Their original boxes! Box label has printed "86 Proof, 1 Pint, A Blend Of The Finest Imported Rums, Jamaican Rum 70%, Martinique Rum 20%, Virgin Island Rum 10%, Prepared and Bottled By Trader Vic's Products Co, South San Francisco California".

Not bad for an hour's time and $15.00!

Psycho Tiki D (I know I am and even at lunch I am)!

Ouch! You Dog - I love those boxes! Great graphics.

Is there still rum in the decanters?

Sabu,

That is the sad part of the story I left out from an otherwise jubilant day. I asked about the liquor and the lady selling these (and many other liquor bottles, though no more tiki) said as a licensed antique dealer as she once was, it was illegal for her to sell these with liquor in them, Hence they were full when she originally purchased them and poured all of the liquor out of all of the bottles she had purchased. Oh, the humanity!

Thanks...the boxes are amazing and I have never seen them before. I am still pinching myself!

PTD

PS, Nice post on the Buffet thread...I apologize if I let my emotions get away from me. You said exactly what I was trying to say, only waaaaay nicer!

A couple a items found a few weeks ago.
The first two look like bookends and one is glued back together but still look great, next is one salt shaker souvenir from Hawaii and a Cocoa Joe's tiki? the last one I have no idea, seems to be made from lava and is flat on the back, maybe some strange ashtray, all found at a estate sale for $3.00,
gotta love it.

And the paper that came with the south seas version

Here's a couple versions of the same sculpt as the CCJ's bookends:

Buzzy
Thanks for the info on those Tiki's, I have no idea about this stuff as I am just starting my journey into the realm of the island gods.
Looking forward to many more finds though.
Thanks again.

Hey there,

While searching one of the thrift shops here on the east coast, I spotted what looked to be a nice looking Tiki mask.

Since I'm a newbie, I am so afraid I'm going to hear... not Tiki.. LOL

The lighter parts of the mask are either brass or copper type detailed flashing(?)

The back is hollowed out and becomes solid to the end to form a stand.

Any feedback would be great. This is my first non-Ebay tiki find. (Well, hopefully) Loved to hear from the experts.. I can take more detailed pics if anyone needs them.

Cheers!

Rick

Thanks, I was afraid I'd hear that. I'll wait for a few more responses before it finds it's way to Ebay or something.

My rule when out in the wild, hunting for tiki treasures is; if you think even slighty that it might be African, don't buy it. Not saying that African art is bad at all, but...

A few finds over the past couple of weeks. Four mugs shown on pg. 23 of Tiki Quest maybe from the Hawaiian Cottage.

A large carving. Weighs a ton and maybe Koa wood.

Two huge Tur Mai Kai glasses

Also came acrossed a good amount of tiki at a local antiques show here in Michigan. When I asked the guy how much he wanted for the box he told me they were being held for "The" tiki guy from Chicago. Some people have a great network going. Had a good day though.
