Awesome find, Pakelika!

I had a pretty good day garage-saling, as far as paper items go.

I found a mint copy of the Better Homes & Gardens Guide to Entertaining:

...which has this uncredited photo of Victor Bergeron partaking of a luau:

Then I found this small photo of an unknown tiki pool hut in a design brochure from the 1960s:

And an ad for the Half Moon Inn in an old Westways magazine:

But best of all was looking through a September 1968 copy of PSA Journal (Photographic Society of America), and finding this old photo of Barney West's tikis at the Tiki Junction in Sausalito, CA:

Oh. And I found this vintage hula doll too for a quarter:

Great haul, Sabu --

LOVE the "Guide to Entertaining" .... that cover photo is so fantastic, I wish I could step inside it ... I think I have a modified edition of that book, as it has the same photo of Victor & also recipes for a luau ...

Good work!

Just landed Pearl of Wisdom on ebay...
very excited to win the bidding...but did
I pay too much...around $32.00? Oh
well...the government prints money every
day! Living in Northern Wisconsin we don't
find much tiki stuff at garage sales or
thrift stores.

I found some Poly Pop LPs in the local Sal Army:

George Cates' "Polynesian Percussion"

Alfred Apaka "The Best of Alfred Apaka"

Plus copies of Don Ho's "Suck'em Up, Don Ho and the Aliis Live" & "The Don Ho TV Show"

I saw one go for eighty-something dollars on ebay not too long ago, and it's a great thing to look at on your wall, so I'd be pretty happy if I were you.

Here's a nice find I had a few weeks back at a flea market. Very nice vintage velvet!
I ran right across the room when I saw her hanging there. I asked the guy how much and he said $30.00. I said "$30.00?" He said "How about $20.00?" I said "sounds good". Paid the man and was grinning the rest of the day. I was just shocked that he was asking $30.00. I thought it would be more. I didn't mean anyhting when I repeated the amount that he said I was just checking out the velvet and thinking about it. Saved myself $10.00 and didn't even have to do anything!! Oh, and that's $20.00 Canadian funds which is like $4.50 US (HA HA!)

I know nothing about this painting and the other day was on ebay and saw a cooking book which has the exact picture of the same girl on it! Pretty cool! The girl jogged my memory now and I went to my Hawaiian album collection and sure enough in my collection was a album form the Polynesian Cultural center advertising Hawaii and sure enough there's a picture of the same girl!! Pretty cool to have a velvet that was done probably from the same photos. Would be a good investigation once I get some time. Thought some of you might be interested. Mahalo! Dan

Nice find Dan,
I just picked up a "Flowers of Hawaii" small book C. 1964. There are several pics of Hawaiian beauties. One picture is that exact girl and pose. The caption..."Hawaii's Poster Girl...beautiful Rose Marie Alvaro, seen in a setting of Hilo-grown orchids"

So there's a name to the face!

Just found a little puffer today at the thrift shop. It's about 5" in diameter and most of it's spines have been broken off. Each spine is sort of t-shaped on the body. I've never seeon one like it.

Unfortunately, it's not empty and smells disgusting. Has anyone ever had to clean out something like this?

On my way back from Florida, I had time and stopped at several antique malls to make a bad trip a little better. I got a few goodies and had to leave a couple for high prices or no price.

The surfer mug is marked on the bottom "Blue Hawaii" and I hope it's from the Blue Hawaii in Nashville. If anyone knows the truth, let me know. My first Leilani mug is from the Hawaiian Inn. The unmarked brown mug is yet another take on the peanut mug. And last is the Orchids Mr. Bali Hai rip off with lid. It is missing the paint.

I also got a couple of cool Derek Hukilau 2004 mugs...

I just returned the stinky little puffer I found last week, for one of these. Glad to finally have one! He says PMP with a copywright symbol on the bottom.

I just returned from a holiday where we drove from here, Vancouver, down to San Diego. Of course I had Tiki Road Trip in hand and saw some really cool places that I probably would have driven right by. The Tonga Room in San Francisco was AWESOME! If you haven't been there you have to check it out. Trader Vic's in Emeryville was unreal! Picked up two of the 70th Anniversary mugs that they had. One is in the shape of the Hoffman mugs from the Kahiki which is pretty cool (far right) and the other is numbered out of 500. I also bought one of the Mai Tai glasses with the 70th Anniversary on it.
What is the deal with the Antique Mall in Long Beach??? Anybody go there? They had some nice pieces there, mostly common, nothing too exotic but the prices were unbelievable!!! It was actually frustrating because there was a few items that I wanted to buy but the prices were unreal! A 12" Coco Joe Tiki in HW for $34.00. That's crazy. There were some other Coco Joe stuff that were around 6" and they were all $15.00 - $25.00. If you are in the area check it out. Pretty much all Thrift store and garage sale stuff but way over priced. I haven't seen so much Tiki stuff where it had pricing like that.
Is that how it is down there? I barely saw any other places with the older stuff. Although I admit I did not have time to go around everywhere.
Oceanic Arts was awesome and that is where the Tiki pole on the left and the Fu Man Chu style carving beside it came from and also the dark carving on the far right. The middle Tiki carving is the one from Home Depot.
The small red mug on the right is from the Art Show in San Francisco which was great. Munktiki thought up a winner with that dispensing machine!
I was disapointed that the enchanted Tiki Room at Disney Land was closed down but I did pick up the mugs which are quite a bit cheaper than getting them from ebay.
Overall a great trip. Just glad I finally got to see some places that all you TCer's talk about. Mahalo!! Dan

Ever since my wife and I had our second baby things have been decent when it comes to finding tiki stuff – on my daily visits to the Goodwill last week I scored a couple decent items – a Treasure Craft tiki ashtray thingee, a gigantic monkeypod carved pineapple bowl and a couple albums including a pretty smooth one by Axel Stordahl called “Jasmine and Jade.” All in all I was happy with my meager results but then I got the surprise of the weekend when I got a call from my Dad on his cell phone. They were spending the weekend at the beach and one morning decided they’d go waste some time by looking around a flea market in a rural town outside of Ocean City Maryland. My Mom had sighted them first and approached cautiously knowing that if she showed too much interest the prices would get higher. A guy had on his table 6 mugs from a Polynesian restaurant that use to exist in Cherry Hill, NJ called the Hawaiian Cottage. She played it dumb and asked what they were for, the guy told her they were drink glasses. She said her son collected barware but she didn’t think I had anything like that or if I’d even like them – she asked how much – he said $5.00 a piece. My Mom played it cool - had my Dad call me and ask if I’d be interested in the glasses – knowing damn well I’d be freaking out if they didn’t buy them – my dad played it off as if I wasn’t real interested and my mom kind of backed off – the guy suddenly lowered the price to $2.00 a piece – needless to say when they told me they got them I felt like a 10 year old on Christmas eve waiting for Santa. My Mom also spotted the Hawaii Kai skull mug – asked the woman how much and ended up plopping down $2.00 for it! I’m thinking of giving my parents an allowance to buy tiki stuff they happen to come across it – this was the best score I’ve ever had personally and I wasn’t even there to witness it!

A group shot of the mugs...

2 of the Geisha girl mugs made by OMC still with stickers attached and w/Hawaiian Cottage Cherry Hill NJ painted on the backs...

2 of the parrot mugs also made by OMC stil with stickers attached - embossed in the mug's mold around the base it says Hawaiian Cottage - underneath has "Made Exclusively for the Hawaiian Cottage Cherry Hill NJ by Otagiri Mfg. Co.

2 Orchids of Hawaii mugs w/no Hawaiian Cottage identification but still nice mugs that I didn't have!

Finally the Hawaii Kai skull mug...my parents couldn't make out what it said on the back - they could make out Hawaii but couldn't figure out the Kai part. I actually went to the Tiki Quest book looking for skull mugs and was hoping it was this one - I've already got one of the Tepco skulls - luckily my prayers were answered!
