That is as smooth as a babies bottom. Even if you didn't go any further he looks finished. Gunna follow this one.

Nice style on your Tangaroa, surfintiki! You are not going to have any trouble carving your Lono. Looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks for looking tiki peeps!
Tikidav-thanks, your Moai's shape is perfect, love the look of that one too. I think we have the same eye for design!
Johnnyp- some baby's bottoms are poopie!
AA- carves too easy, I feel like a slacker! This piece is VERY dry, some detailed parts wanna just flop right off.
Anyway, here's the weekends latest offerings...

Thanks for peepin'!

I know, I know...seems like I take forevvvvvver. I'm not stewing over it at all, it's that I have very little time to carve these days. So a little here, a little there.
Thanks for the praise peeps!
Benz- I'm a sanding fool. I wish I would stop it.
McTiki- I know I know! You'll have to hide my sanding paper.
Haikai and Paipo- Cool, Thanks!
Frrrrreddie B- you a funny guy! He's gonna be in good hands.

Here's after applying some art with white gesso.

Here's after first coat of stain, sedona red, blotched quickly with a rag.

And after I applied a darker stain to the the face and other creases etc.

Next; some poly and some final photos. And a brew-ha-ha

I like it! I like the gesso alot. I have never heard of it before, so I just did a quick google, read up, and now want to ask, why gesso? Did you have it on hand, or is it better than paint in this application? Thanks.

4wd-EXCELLENT question. Gesso is just something any fine artist has around, so yeah, I had some around. It is the whitest of whites. You use it to coat your canvas before painting, or if ya did a painting, and it sucked, you Gesso over it, and start again. Ahhhhh, I still remember the day I spilled a full jug on my new dorm room carpet at U. of Tampa in '83...ahhhh the memories. Wrecked that carpet. Everyone in my painting class class laughed their arse off at me. Classic. Me and gesso, we's goes ways back.
-sorry too much wine tonite.
ooh, I put a coat of poly on tonite...looks great. Wanna see?
