Wow, that guy is one of the most unique Tiki carvings I have ever come across! Never seen anything remotely like it. Great find!

Pagan
Volume 5 Number 3 January 1968

Aside from the cover image the only other thing I found interesting in this issue was a pictorial of actress Dene Starnes who played the zombie dancer in Ed Wood's Orgy of the Dead - and actually that's the reason I bought it years ago. Gaby Martone (Ryke) who played a mermaid in Mermaids of Tiberone has a single photo (Gaby was quite prolific so this isn't that rare to find)

Other photos from the cover image set were previously posted by thejab. That issue was Volume 5 Number 4.

I wish there were any explanation of who or where, but this magazine chose to leave the inside cover girl (and tiki) a mystery:

Nothing else tiki in the issue.
*Sniff*

If you have any issue information please include it for future historians. that's a very nice tiki - looks like a real one built by ancient Polynesians instead of ancient atomic jetage man.

Bigbrotiki I asked someone who knew William Rotsler if it was possible he created the suffering bastard tiki. In my opinion there's a fairly good chance he was the photographer and he was equally known as an artist - but the only "sculpture" I'm aware of he did is bending wire into shapes. Who knows it could be in some LA area science fiction author's back yard right now.

Basically since the start of this thread a couple of years ago the same 3 pictures of this woman with the lucky tiki keep showing up. So here's a fourth with some context.

The cheeky blond in the second photo is Babette Bardot, an actress in two Russ Meyer films.

No! Really? I would have never guessed, even after Martian introduced it as such first:

Unlike the lucky tiki this fellow appears to be a frustrated suffering bastard.

I was of course speaking about the CARVING, and its weird organic, rounded-off style, which I cannot attribute to any specific carver. It looks like a non-Tiki sculptor tried to portray the Trader Vic's Suffering Bastard bottle. Leaving the palm tree base on the Tiki was something Andres Bumatay did sometimes, but the face is not stylized enough, too naturalistic for his style.

So I really have never seen this style of Tiki Carving before, neither in the style, nor in the fact that the Suffering Bastard was turned into a full-sized carving.

A suffering Jimmy Durante is a profound insight.

I saw these recently.
This one is a little earlier but I guess it fits in here:

The above original photograph was taken in 1950 at a Furniture Convention in Chicago. The photographer was Jerry Reichstein.

Try not too look at the girl in this following one but take a look at the background. She scares me!!

What kind of pose is that? Maybe she just had a Zombie or something??!!
Check out the old rattan bar and carved Tiki in the background!! Pretty cool!
