Hey you wanker, I was in the crowd!
DEVO was awesome. I would do it all over again.
The price didn't matter.

I just got back from the L.A. show. That was a good time. I was situated about 4 bodies back from the stage. There was a guy behind me who felt that myself and some others nearby were too rambunctious. This was not thrash-level activity, mind you, we were just dancing in place. He didn't want any movement around him at all. This guy actually summoned security. The guard just looked at us, mumbled some perfunctory warning and left. We didn't change what we were doing but I was still nice to the guy. He ended up coming around, I think he even felt like a dork in the end. It was so lame.
It takes a good while to get your car back after the show if you park it at HOB. I met a guy that came out here from back East just to see the show. He had been a fan since the early 80's and never got a chance to see them before. There were also a couple of guys from England with a similar story. Devo did not disappoint.
I hadn't seen them since the early 90's and they were as good as ever. "Gut Feeling" made me verklempt. I couldn't take it no mo'. At some point Gerry came out to the valet zone. I guess someone was smoking some substance or other near the stage and he was chuckling that his brother got a bit of a contact buzz from it and forgot what he was supposed to be doing up there. They were heading to The Standard. It was late so I headed home, I'd had my fill. It was a great show.

I've heard this complaint from numerous bands that play in the Bay Area after playing in So Cal. Many have said that in LA people just stand there like zombies and don't act appreciative or into the music. I can't say that I've experienced it much at shows in LA because I just don't go to large venues. Instead I'm mostly at smaller clubs. I've never been to a House of Blues so I don't have any idea how big they are.
I have to hand it to Bay Area audiences though. There's always plenty of dancing and carrying on, and if we like a band we let them know! I just saw Teenage Fanclub at Bimbo's on Friday and the band was terrific. The crowd was good as well, lots of loud cheering and people dancing. The band seemed to love us - they did 3 encores. Bimbo's is always a great venue.
I got fed up with big concerts after just attending a few in the late 70s. I hate reserved seats (unless it's a play or movie). I've been almost thrown out of some concerts because I just wanted to dance and I couldn't remain in my seat.
I hate it as well when people stand next to you up front talking on the phone or chatting loudly to their friends while your trying to hear the band!
I know if I paid $100 to see DEVO I would be pissed off if the crowd was like you experienced. I'm sure the band was worth it though! In Oakland they are going to play the Paramount Theatre, which is a beautiful place, but it is strictly reserved seating. I'm sure the bouncers will not stand for any leaving your seat to dance. Anyway, I won't be there because I'll be at the Hukilau!

Frustratingly, Devo, Spearhead and Buckwheat Zydeco are all playing at the same time on different stages during the Bumbershoot Festival here in Seattle during Labor Day weekend. I know for some this would be an easy choice, but I'm a fan of all three. Devo definitely has the strongest pull. I remember the first time I ever heard of them was seeing them on Sat. Nite Live when I was in Jr. High. They made me rethink music. I was a Kiss and Zep freak until my exposure to Devo, Joe Jackson, Ramones, B-52s and others. Me and my buddy suffered many taunts and a bit of physical abuse for our audacity to wear our "punk" pins and wrap around sunglasses, when in reality we were hardly punk at all.

I just looked at the Bumbershoot site, and they indeed did cancel, but I am so psyched to see who is replacing them, IGGY AND THE STOOGES, WOO HOO!

I like the 62.50 ticket price. Means it won't be too crowded!!!! Yee Haw!! HOB Anaslime only holds 1030 max.
1/2 the size of HOB Hollyweird. A little Elbow Room is nice. Gettin old, you know.

Yeah, it was too expensive, no opening band, and not long enough...but with the ticket price so high, at least there weren't a bunch of KIDS there! Hey, I have kids too, and love music, but I'm sick of people bringing their young (under 12) kids to shows...happened at X a few weeks ago (6 year olds behind me with parents)... come on folks, get a freakin' babysitter for the nite!
OK, I feel better now..

I just got back from seeing Devo tonight here in DC. It was great for me to finally see them live. Nearly 25 years after buying my first Devo LPs, it was great to be at the front of the stage and being able to mouth and shout the lyrics which I was so familiar with. They were still as visually exciting as when I saw them perform on that old Fridays night television show on ABC.
This was somewhat of a 70's rock nostalgia week for me. Wednesday night I saw the New York Dolls perform, Thursday night a theatre performance of the Who's Tommy, and Devo tonight! I also saw Los Stritjackets and the Pontani Sisters yesterday, but that was not 70's nostalgia, but one month old nostalgia after seeing them at Chicago's Exotica event.
I can't remember a time when I saw so many great shows in different venues in such a short period.

Hey Unga Bunga or Bamboo Ben -
Did the Anaslime show sell out? I decided to fly down on September 1st. to see DEVO at Anaheim HOB. Afterwards I'm driving down to San Diego for the weekend.
I'm debating whether to buy an advance ticket or not. I hate Ticketmaster.

Jab-
Just so you know- HOB in Anaheim still ads on the Ticketmaster charge at the box office. When I saw saw MC5 and Fu Manchu there I bought tickets at the box office and they still added the stupid service charge!! I personally hate both Ticketmaster and the House of Blues. But I possibly will be there for DEVO!!
Later,
Spermy

It must be ska revival time. The English Beat performs in DC on Sept. 8. with ABC. No word on when Madness might hit town though.
