There was sun today, so that means there was a sunset!

I took full advantage of the nice sunny day today. I put the drum out to dry and spent the day rotating and moving it to maximize its curing. To occupy my time between drum rotations, I carved a Moai out of a less than perfect log:

He's 5'8", but we'll put <6' tall on his dating profile and hope some ditzy chick looking for a tall, handsome guy doesn't know what < means.

I had some time left in the afternoon and another less than perfect log so I made another Moai:

He's only 5" tall. I still have a little refining here and there on him still. Not much, just a touch...

Today's work side by side:

Thanks vamp! Glad the table worked for you. I almost started the day by doing a table, but made it a double Moai day instead.

A lot of love and pride goes into making these drums. I thought about making another drum today, but I made two Moais instaed.

It was a warm and sunny day today and I carved two Moais out of two logs that I had sitting around for a while.

If you would have come over today, you would have seen the drum drying in the sun and me working on one of two Moais that I carved today.

Looking good and feeling fine. Hoping it sounds good too...You should see the Moais I carved today.

I hope it's sunny tomorrow. I feel like carving something else.

Today's sunset:

Yesterday's work day was cut short due to lightning and downpours. Today, there was enough sun to help the drum along:

The goal is to rotate and tilt it so there is no shadow in the drum

It should be ready on Saturday for the stain/sealing.

Last August, they tore his house down and he was homeless for several months. He moved down the block and refused to go back to his old house after it was rebulit. He hasn't even visited me this whole time. However, I'm happy to say our dear old friend BuddyCat returned to one of his old stomping grounds:

Welcome back BuddyCat!

Today's project was this log:

It might be a drum or a table or a stool.

I have yet to decide.

Buzzy Out!

Today's sunset:

I didn't like the lower profile of the new piece so I changed it. I thought it needed a more tapered and sleek look:

I also started one of the feet...

And the tough part, I got it all(mostly) hollowed out:

And the other drum is almost done drying...

Buzzy Out!

A couple days ago sunset:

Today:

A lot of cloudy days ahead too

I decided to use the new drum as a test piece for a goat skin head, instead of the cow I've been using. Then I'm going to beat the crap out of it and see if I can bust the head. I'll consider its sound and durability before using either type of head in the future.
And while I'm on the subject of the test drum, I did some more cleaning out of the center of it:

I also carved the feet, the rim part just above the feet, the recess where the rope will go, and sanded it down in prep for the decorating part:

Now it's time for a little tiki drafting session on it.

I also sanded and stained one of those moai I carved last week:

I have a couple more logs ready to go for some quick carves. I'll probably spend the bulk of my day working on those tomorrow.

I think I have to make some more Brady idols real soon too...

Yesterday's sunset:

Test drum update: Jabtiki came over yesterday and we had a good old tiki drum circle jam session. We checked the differnces between the cow and goat head and neither seemed to be better than the other. Each were different, but still good. More testing to come later...
A little tiki drafting on the drum in prep for carving:

A little carving done on the lower rim:

My garage is clean now, so I can use it as my staining work area again. The stained Moai with spar on it, drying away the day:

I like being able to do the staining in the garage because then I can still do other work concurrently without worrying about getting dust stuck to the drying piece
The other Moai is sanded and stained now, ready for some spar.

Also, two more logs just about carve ready:

And finally, I'm doing some stain testing:

I think I'm working on 7 things right now.

Yesterday's sunset:

The two Moai are done now:

I also did a little more on the bottom parts of the drum:

I sketched out what I wanted to do for the next quick piece on a scaled piece of graph paper. To transfer the scaled draft to the log, I tie a sharpie to the end of a bamboo pole and stand back so the drawing is as large as the log is from my vantage point. I hold the drawing with one hand next to the log while I draw out a same sized design with the bamboo pole pen with the other hand. I had to stand about nine feet away to make the drawing the right size on this log. My arms get tired so I have to do this real fast.
Pretend I have a nine foot pole withna pen on it in my hand instead of of camera, and in this picture you can kind of see my techinque. However, in the picture, the drawing isn't the same size as the log like it was to my eye. The dog is in the way too:

Here it is all sketched up and ready to go:

Teakey: The real test will be on a day when the cow sounds flat. Hopefully, the goat will not be flat also. That's the final, and determining factor.

Back to work.
Buzzy Out!

Today's sunset:

Here's some early in the day progress on the newest carving:

A little bit later in the day, with a little more work done:

Here it was at sunset:

I got another half hour or so of work done on it before it was too dark.

Don't you ever do Moai any more?
The marq is looking Cool.
Can I have Wonder Dog's signature please? Go KIVA, Gooo Kiva.
I think you should do a couple more drums too?
I also think you should take a Florida vacation soon!
