Greentikipat- Thanks! The lobster... what lobster? Oh, the "lobster" is offering? Or is he? (Sorry, I'm just making trouble)
Tikifool- Thanks so much! I really wanted a bit more of a dynamic composition on this one. Thanks for noticing. I learned everything from a book called Dynamic Light and Shadow, by some guy named Hogarth. (my other black and white art hero!) If anyone can find his Tarzan work- It's awesome!
Paipo- I've been searching for a book about Bernie Wrightson called "A Look Back". It's a big retrospective of his work. so far never found it. Oh, yeah, it's a Creature from the Black Lagoon mug! And, if any of you Creature from the Black Lagoon fans have not yet, I greatly encourage you to go visit Ben Chapman's web site. He is the guy who was in the Creature suit in the original film! He is the last Universal Movie monster still alive! He's a real nifty guy, living over on Oahu. He's got a cool web site! He even talks about the upcoming "remake" (choke!).
http://www.the-reelgillman.com/
Insider news: My Hollywood producer buddy has read the new script, and unfortunately didn't have the best things to say about it. Oh no!
sneakytiki-I started painting last July or August, I think. How many paintings? Well, this one will be #11. I got all the other 9 up on my website. Later this month I should get ten up there, (so we can all enjoy the Puppy again and again!), along with some new eye candy. (yum!) I don't know about the whole "painting series" thing. I think you're right, it differs from artist to artist. I'm just going with the flow. Seeing where the Big Island mana leads me. Right now, I don't think there's an end in sight to my Mystic Tiki series. I'm having a lot of fun with it! And, of course, I GOTTA do something really cool for the up coming "Lucky number 13"!
Jungalero-I'm gonna give the same technique a go. I'm still learning alot about it, and I want to get it down. (I'm still not totally sure if I'm getting a inner glow)
Grog- Oh, he's so cranky! Let's hope they get that pesky yellow cartoon people movie finished and Grog can get some sleep!
Okay, one more revealing of how much of a geeky Creature From the Black Lagoon Fan I am. Here's my prize possession residing above my tiki mugs...

And look closer...

Ben signed it "Aloha!" How cool is that!

Brad,

that autographed pic is really sweet. Are you gonna send him a lil' pic of the creature mug painting? I remember the old black and white Tarzan art, very cool. I always thought the Conan B and W art was tops too. Thanks for answering my fan mail questions.

Laters,
S T

My old man took me to see that film in 3D about 30 years ago! I was grooving on the underwater scenes....
It seems to me that horror/monster movies and comics lead one quite naturally into the lowbrow and tiki scene. I went from the classic Marvel and DC titles to SF underground comix and Robert Williams in my teens. I bet there's a ton of TCers that were into a lot of the same stuff as kids. all this talk has made me decide I need to raid my closets and find what's left of my comic collection.

Super cool photo! CFTBL was my favorite movie for a years when I was a kid as well as the other Creature flicks (revenge of and walks among us). I'm with Paipo-the underwater scenes were the shiznit! I really dug the 'old sputtering boat through the jungly river scenes' as well.

I recently purchased CFTBL on 8mm film and got a projector to run it on. I'm planning on cutting some underwater scenes out and making a continuous loop to show on the wall of my house for parties. Like a huge, liquid backdrop to kick up the vibe level a bit.

That Creature mug in your sketch is bad-a$$ too--as is the entire sketch!!

Kinny, this is the second painting in the "religious" series and is entitled "Adam and Eve". Now, if you need any MORE explanation than that....

If this is true, I'll need the sketch from Sodom and Gomorrah to pair with this one...heh! I'm sure a bunch of partying Tikis would be way out of reach of the imagination (Not). Good one Grog!

Creature of the Black Lagoon-Marvel Comics-totally nailed it! Jack Kirby/John Buscema/John Romita/Barry Smith/Steve Ditko/Mike Ploog/Ernie Chan and the occassional Berni Wrightson Swamp Thing were the Grand Masters of that genre! Also CC Beck old Captain Marvels!!! I guess a lot of the artists here were inspired by these greats! You've raised the bar with this new one,Brad! And the Bubbles just add to the greatness! You need to get some mugs made, man!
And don't listen to GROG's art interpretations.....or follow his example! All he does is talk-talk-talk about art, critiquing and interpreting without actually producing much art at all! It's such a sad tragic waste of talent.... If only he'd walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.....
You my friend, accomplish both and all this great work shows!
GOGOGO!

Sneakytiki~I should! Ben's a really friendly guy. He e-mailed my mom and calmed her fears about hip surgery when she had hers. (he has hip surgery a few years earlier). I've sent him some beach mats and stuff in the past, but I should send him something now.
Paipo~ Yeah, I think the Creature is the most "tiki" of the classic monsters. Tropical, hung out in Florida for a while. OH, and Robert Williams! YEAH BABY! the Father of "Low Brow Art"! All hail the king!
Surfnturf~That old boat chugging along the amazon, all those weird "Exotica" bird calls and animal sounds coming from the jungle. "Even me, Lucus, have heard about the tale of the fish man!" Classic! the film loop is a great idea! Let me know if it works. I hope that at the next "Mission Tiki Drive In event, they get some copies of the Creature From the Black Lagoon. That, plus the Ghastly Ones, would ROCK!
Grog~ Yes! Of course! Thank you Prof. Grog.
Hewey~Thanks!
Mctiki~Sodom and Gomora is #12 - for sure!
Kikekike~Weeellll, if you contact Ben, he still sends out autographed photos ya know. But, I wouldn't take my time about it, as he is the oldest living Universal Monster remaining with us. (God bless ya Ben!)
LLT~ Wow, once again Obi-wan-tiki your vast knowledge of Pop culture art world reference is shown! Soo, do you subscribe to Juxtapoz? You know, I can't find it on the Big Island anywhere so I just sent away for my subscription. I figured it'd be a good way to stay in touch with the happening art scene.
Still transferring the sketch to the canvas. Had to redraw the girl a few times - had to keep placing her eyes farther apart to get that "otherworldly" sea nymph look I wanted.

We just picked up a new client, so for the next few days I gotta go through the ol' design cycle with 'em. I may not have too much time i front of the old canvas.
Thanks fro watching,
Big Aloha from the erupting volcano!

GROG drawing EVERYDAY, just not tiki art, so GROG not post art. Plus, the art GROG doing can't be shown until it airs on TV or at the theaters. You can see the next Bamboo Ben comic strip (in color!) this weekend when Nick has the new issue of Tiki Magazine at the Parking Lot Sale.

You my friend, accomplish both and all this great work shows!
GOGOGO!

Yes, Brad is a machine, damn him.

Aloha TC~

Still transferring the sketch. Fixing a few things I didn't feel were realized enough in the small sketch. I Have replace my standard tiki eyes with spiral sea shells - more interesting I think. Thanks for watching, and happy Merrie Monarch festival to everyone! WhooHoo!
Good nite from the erupting volcano!

Very sweet, Those eyes, really change the whole look. Pulls you in and spins your head around the picture a few times.

I know a couple people that are master painters(have skills) but have no imagination. I would have to say that you are lucky enough to have both.
