Aloha friends! The holidays are upon us and that means it's time to consume mass quantities!

Freaky Boutiki, one of the first and apparently last establishments in San Diego still proudly raising the tiki torch high, is here as always to help with your seasonal binging needs. There's a new kid in town too right next door: FBG boasts an awesome selection of handmade gifts and collectibles by some of today's hippest tiki artists from southern California and abroad, but we'll get to that soon enough...

Below we see our beloved grotto...

stocked with vintage and contemporary vinyl...

This excellent sampler from Dionysus Records includes Robert Drasnin, Lushy, Orchestra Superstring, Clouseaux, SSSU, The Tiki Tones, Chaino, Karla Pundit and a limited edition signed print by Tiki Tony!

Tribal art resource books make great gifts like Pacific Encounters, The Art of Tonga, Pacific Tapa, Maori Carved Pare, Shields of Melanesia, The Oldman Collection of Polynesian Artifacts, Body Ornaments of the Solomon Isklands, SDMA's Oceanic Art catalog and the essential Revised Hawaiian Sculpture pictured below...

Of course we also have imported masks for budget conscious stocking stuffers and collector newbies alike. Don't worry, we've plenty for you as your tastes develop. You'll be collecting Munktikis and combing the swap meets for old Coco Joes in no time but a twenty dollar hand carved mask is a fine place to start growing your kine vibe. Don't let anybody tell you different.

Hawaiian Island Creations or HIC as the surfers know it has specialized in high performance surf gear since 1971. This is a company I remember from when I was a kid and Freaky Boutiki is proud to be an official HIC dealer.

Their styles change seaonally so if you see a design you dig jump on it.

Here's a cool early 70's logo treatment on a chocolate cotton tee.

HIC wallets available in embossed bifold leatherette and heavy duty embroidered trifold nylon!

Yes there are still a few pair of Spam Boardshorts available. Sizes are limited and this design is totally discontinued.

Be your own little drummer boy or girl w/ these Fabulous Tahitian Style drums by Bay Park Buzzy.

You've seen Buzzy at Oasis, You've seen him hustling doo-dads on the grass behind the Catamaran Resort. You've seen him ballyhooed in Tiki Magazine. Hell, you've seen him half naked. But I ask you friends, tis this not the season to own a piece of the Super-stardom that is Bay Park Buzzy for yourself?

I maintain that Buzzy is an artist and these beautiful hourglass thumpers are certainly the hottest thing since Julie Newmar.

Carved of Palm wood with a durable fixed skin and rope accents, Freaky Boutiki Gallery is proud to offer these meticulously detailed hand crafted footed drums at resonable prices.

16"x17"
Features a bright pop at the rim. Perfect for thumb rolls.
$420

17"x17"
Features a deeply resonant center, midrange at the rim.
$490 ***SOLD***

Aloha friends and Mele Kalikimaka. Another years has flown by and it's time again for one of my yearly rants where I bitch about social injustice or settle old grudges by publically shaming fatheads who've pissed me off during the past year, but franky... I got nuthin'.

Surely, 2009 can suck it. Heck I've had more than just a few bumps in the road this year, but I'm overwhelmingly grateful that my generous and caring friends in the tiki community have helped me rebuild after yet another freak disaster (pun intended) to help me offer something new for tiki lovers worldwide in the form of FBG. You may expect cool things from us in 2010!

Everybodys been cool and I'm in a pretty good mood so instead of wasting alot of space posting frightening pictures of Darfur, Drowning Polar Bears or Glenn Beck, lets dig some cool art...

Oh, My most sincere and best wishes to everyone for a year full of good things.
_____________

Looky here!
Curious onlookers (possibly from Utah) dig the rap as visiting artist Heath runs the voodoo down...

We've carved alot of fun stuff at The Boutiki in 2009 and had visits from lots of fine folks. BTW, Any chisel carver is welcome to stop by and get their carve on along the boulevard with us. Simply BYOTools & Burro and get choppin, any day from ten to six!

More surf inspired art @ FBG...

FBG welcomes surf board sculptor Ronnie Jackson from the historic seaside town of Long Branch, NJ.

Ronnie's uber cool pieces are carved from real boards by meticulous hand cutting of the original surface glassing, sculpting of the foam core, airbrushing and re-glassing.

Palm Hut Sunset $700

Waiting Dog Sunset $700

Still more surfy goodness...

Another new artist to FBG is Ocean Beach CA resident sculptor Bill Riley.

Ocean Beach, (O.B. to the restless natives) lies just south of Mission Beach and has a reputation for harboring all sort of creative folk who love the sea and sand. Visitors to SD may have already seen Bill's clay surf figures at Balboa Parks famous Spanish Village artists colony where he also works and displays. We hope you enjoy his beautifully handbuilt and glazed ceramic sculptures...

Just wanted to say thanks for letting come down and hang out with the Freak Factory gang Saturday.
The carving, the laughing, the people watching, the cheese-steak, and of course Toni's dancing.
I had a blast and look forward to doing it again!

I swear I'm going to throw something in a fire-ring soon...
