Thank you for sharing these great postcards and I like how you are grouping them together.
Chucks in hawaii takes the cake for me - the red nauga mixed with the bamboo and weathered wood (plus all those floats) looks REAL nice. Is the one in Santa Barbara similarly decorated?

Don't know if to laugh or to cry. Wonder what happened to its brother...
Maybe the aliens who built the Moai on Rapa Nui saw what happened to that one and rescued the other with a tractor beam from their UFO!

Holy Moly! Talk about de-tikification! The moai to fisherman is most appalling, but so is that brick veneer over the entire building. I weep.
Dustycajun - just to follow up on Bigbro's earlier comment, improper use of Retro is a pet peeve of mine. If something is old and still reflects the design aspects of its era, it is Vintage. Something is only retro if it is new and reflects the design of an earlier time. Thus, a 1965 Ford Mustang is vintage; the current Mustangs are retro.
No big deal, but it bugs. Thanks so much for sharing the postcards - good to see what once was.

OK, I got the Retro vs. Vintage thing - won't make that mistake again.
There have been several questions regarding the Chucks Steakhouse located in Santa Barbara. It is Vintage, have been around for a long time now, however, it is not really tikified. Still worth a stop for Happy Hour Mai Tais and free steak bites. Here are a couple of photos.

Yes, there really is a "Chuck", and his name is Charles "Chuck" Rolles. Chuck graduated from the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant School in 1956, and then moved to Hawaii, and in 1959, opened the first of a number of restaurants that bear his name in Waikiki. After opening his second steak house in Waikiki, he was the first to bring the steak house and salad bar concept to the Continental United States.
Ken Williams was the first of Chuck's partners to bring the concept to the East Coast. Ken opened the first Chuck's Steak House in the East with its salad bar operation over 35 years ago, in West Haven, Connecticut. It was then that Chuck and his partners opened the first of a number of Chuck's Steak Houses that stretch from California to the East Coast.
Customers fell in love with the informal atmosphere, the open grills, all you could eat salad bars and high value concept. By the combining of the finest aged Western choice beef available, with the open hearth cooking, Chuck's Steak House has long established a solid reputation. Many have tried to copy the Chuck's Steak House and salad bar concept over the years. Most have met with varying degrees of success.
BUT, we are the original, and we are STILL THE BEST!
There is also a new RETRO tiki restaurant in the Santa Barbara area (Goleta to be exact) that is called Kona Ranch House. It has a nice little thatched hut bar and some Tikis and Hawaiian stuff on the walls. It is worth a stop if you are in the area. Here are a couple of photos.

Found another beautiful color of the Naugas. The orange ones were used for the Outrigger Room at Coffee Dans restaurant.
And some more red Naugas at the bar in the Hawaiian in Long Beach.

Does anyone have a Coffee Dan's matchbook (or menu!) that shows the "Outrigger Room" font and logo?:
Dustycajun, is the room shown below the exterior actually the Outrigger Room, or is it the Coffee shop?

This thread reminded me of the old Drum Room in the now restored President Hotel here in Kansas City. Well, they restored everything but the Drum Room. Now it's kind of a Cuban-themed bar/eatery with lots of TVs mounted all around. Oh well, enjoy the VINTAGE photo from their '50s brochure:

Bigbro - I am not sure if the postcard from Coffee Dans shows the Outrigger Room or just part of the coffee shop. This room looks quite a bit different than the other part of the coffee shop that is not shown in the picture I posted. I remember seeing a Coffee Dans matchbook once from another restaurant, so there is probably one out there somewhere. Where did you get the black and white shot of the Outrigger Room exterior? Your archives are impressive indeed!
