Did I see several Ape Fez mugs in the ads for the new Teen College Comedy "Accepted"? There was a "Tiki" bar scene in the TV ads with what looked like the standard Tiki Farm Ape mugs on the bartop.

And there's always the IMDb Keyword Search for "Tiki", which shows 6 hits:

1. FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) 5.7/10
2. Don't Make Waves (1967) 5.6/10
3. Bikini a Go Go (2004) (V) 3.6/10
4. Troll (1986) 3.3/10
5. She Gods of Shark Reef (1958) 2.7/10
6. "SpongeBob SquarePants" (1999)

In the South Park episode 'Casa Bonita', you can see people holding tiki mugs.

But according to this
thread, the real Casa Bonita has no tiki.

I never really get to this side of TC very often but it's pretty interesting. I cant say too much (Top Secret!) but in the new movie "Snakes on a Plane" starring Samuel L. Jackson which is huge right now on the internet and it isn't even out yet, they filmed some here in Vancouver BC. We were contacted to do a movie rental and they rented a bunch of items from my collection and a couple of our original pieces from our business, Taboo Tiki.
They did this part in the Vancouver Airport where they convereted it to look like a Hawaiian airport and they got a bunch of our stuff in there for set decor. Pretty damn cool but it is not out yet so dont know what it looks like yet. Knowing how these rentals work, you probably wont see a thing but who knows. Maybe someone gets shot or bitten to death on one of our Tiki poles!! That would be cool but probably not!
Thought some of you might want to check it out as there is alot of hype about this movie coming out! So keep your eyes open!!
Mahalo, TabooDan

I can confirm this, there are some tikis in Snakes on a Plane. I wouldn't see it just for the tikis but it was a pleasant surprise for me. They are all in the first 20 or so minutes of the movie.

Hey there! Reido from Taboo Tiki went and saw the movie (Snakes on a Plane)and was stoked to see our Tiki's in the movie. You can see them in the back ground right at the beginning of the movie but no one gets killed on them. Unfortunately, our hand carved Tiki Mask is hanging upside down in the shot! Come on.....what the hell are the set designers thinking! You can also see a few of our Poles and a few pieces from our collection. I'll try to add a picture later.

Anyways, before I forget, I had to go through this whole topic to see if anybody had put on "Beyond The Valley of the Dolls" from 1970.
Kind of a weird one but not bad. It was just on TV and when the two girls (sorry, dont know their names) are making out in the room towards the end, the room is full of really cool rattan furniture. Later when the freaky he/she thing comes looking for one of them, you can see Hawaiian paintings/prints in bamboo frames of Hula girls and they look to be by that artist Savage. I didnt watch all the movie so there might be more in this one.
Also, in the scene where the he/she thing chops the head off a guy in, what I might add, leopard print speedo's, there is a large white colored Tiki mask in the Oceanic Arts style hanging on the wall by the bar. This mask is again seen when the killer chases after another person who is dressed in a Nazi uniform. If you havent seen this movie then you are probably reading this thinking it sounds great!! Hey, it's just one of those ones that you have to see yourself. And now that I said there looks to be a little Tiki and leopard print underwear in it, what are you waiting for?? I see there is quite a few of these movies on ebay! Happy Hunting!! TabooDan

Inspired by Sweet Daddy Tiki's words, I continue in the tedious, thankless task of searching old 1970s porn for tiki.

This week, I bring you the 1978 film, "Pet of The Month", starring Mariwin Roberts. Here is the IMDb synopis of the film:

"Pet of the Month. Mariwin Roberts is featured in this Hawaiian adventure. As she recounts for the office girls her recent adventure, the audience is treated to a visual & sexual tour-de-force. From hang gliding above the tropical cliffs to lovemaking on the lovely sands, beautiful Hawaii is seen in an entirely new light. This Pet proves to be the hottest thing to Hawaii since volcanoes. Aloha!"

Aimed more towards a female audience, this film was far too romantic for this coconut boy. If I have to watch soft-focus sex scene after soft-focus sex scene, I'd like to see a Penthouse Pet-quality actress in them at least. Sheesh! (Oh, wait, Mariwan Roberts is a Penthouse Pet). Hey! I loved this film! Three fully erect tikis!

Well, the best part of the film involved no sex whatsoever. The happy couple are out on a date, enjoying the nightlife of what is supposed to be Honolulu or Waikiki, but evidently the night-footage shot in Hawaii must have been lost or inadequate, so the director edited-in a nice cliche montage of neon signs from Los Angeles. Either the director was a total tiki-bar afficianado, or he wanted tropical bars that might be mistaken for Hawaiian. In either case, EVERY single sign in this montage is a famous Los Angeles tiki bar of yore. Here are some screenshots:

Don The Beachcomber in Hollywood.

Trader Vic's in Beverly Hills

The Luau in Beverly Hills

Wan-Q (Hollywood, I believe)

Bob Brook's Seven Seas, Hollywood.

A close-up of the tiki in front of the Seven Seas.

This montage was so nice that I'm going to try and clip it as a short .avi file and put it on Rapidshare so that you can all check it out.

Sabu

Hate to brag (not), but on a personal note, here's another BVD/tiki connection: this past summer I actually hung out with co-star Marcia McBroom not only at Forbidden Island, but in my home tiki lounge! She looks the same! She teaches high school in NY now. I met her because I'm pals with her manager Siouxzan (who also manages most of the Meyer babes), who is a total tiki freak, she has a tiki-fied backyard and everything. Pictorial proof:
http://www.thrillville.net/scenes/scenes49.html

actually the reason I initially came here to post was I've been meaning to mention Larry Buchanan's no-budget wonder CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE (1966), available on several budget DVD labels but the best print is on the recent Elite release - it features a full-on tiki background for the opening credits, even though the story, such as it is, is about some kinda voodoo crap in the South and was filmed in Texas! An impressive tiki statue is on full display as "exotica" music plays over the credits. It even has genre icon John Agar, sitting around looking quite bored. I love it.

I searched these here forums a bit and didn't find it noted. So, I thought I should.

The 1962 film Mothra has what appears to be two Moai in the ending scenes. When the Alilena twins are brought back to the island by Mothra.

I didn't even bother to look since I figured that was an obvious one.I showed Mothra at my show last year and built a whole tiki theme around it with the Mai Kai Gents performing. There's a lot of tiki in Japanese monster movies (King Kong vs Godzilla is another good one) and in fact I submitted an article on this very topic OVER TWO YEARS AGO to Otto for the, ahem, next issue of Tiki News...in fact I'm gonna go upstairs right now and kick his ass...AGAIN...

The little girl Gertie watches a cartoon that mentions a super hero fighting against terrible tikis.

In the special features on the DVD, Kevin Smith visits roadside attractions, including the Weeki Wachee Mermaids.

The cartoon Gertie is watching is called "Major Damage vs the Tiki Terrors", and it is an actual cartoon! I managed to find a copy of the comic and DVD some years back. The guy who produced/directed it is Chris Bailey. Kevin Smith added Major Damage to Jersey Girl as a nod to Bailey who directed the short lived Clerks: The Cartoon.

I'll attempt to remember and dig it out so I can bring it to Hukilau in case somebody would like to view it at one of the parties!

There are tikis and moais and I think hula girls ( didn't rewind the DVR) in the cgi movie "Encounter in the Third Dimension". A movie made about 3D. It was originally made for Imax theatres in 1998.

It was just for a few moments that the tikis appeard but, pretty interesting anyways. If you have both kinds of 3D glasses grab them befor the show. I think the GREY style lens is what is used to watch this show. The blue/red ones didn't work well.

AND Elvira! was in it as well, hubba hubba.

It will air again this Tues 10/24 on INHD 9pm eastern/6pm pac.
