I saw the tusks first-hand and have say they are even better in person (really). The amount of detail made my eyes hurt just looking at it - I can't imaging trying to carve that small! I am trying...

Another magical pendant carved! How do you manage to give an expression so personal to your subject? It's really a mystery to me...
Waiting for more progress pic and détails!
Cheers sensei carver!

Really great head being created here. Is that tusk or bone, I am guessing tusk? This piece is already dripping skill, expertise, and experience!

Ben, I don't ever post anything on your thread (it's not like you need my input ) But I look often, your work always amazes and inspires me. Got to take a hands-on look at one of your pieces (Babalu's) and I was blown away. Keep doin' that voodoo that you do so well.

Laojia, Thanks, Appreciate the kind words. Not long now.
T-Mango, Your kind words too really feel good, and Tusk IT Is for sure, I don't know about dripping in Experience but he is Certainly providing a good deal of that stuff!
Surfin Surfer, OF Course it's Magic, You don't believe they would really let me Carve a piece of bone now Do YOU? No Way, Just a twitch of the wand makes it look like I'm working my butt off!
OK so Here's a small update from today, Lots of cleanup and re-shaping to doQ

Ok Benz, ...what tool do you use to make curved lines in bone? Or what type of burr? I find none of the burr shapes work, maybe the reverse cone.

Jeez Ben!! You just keep cranking out the hits!
We were all talking at the last Chop about how fun is was going to be to get you out here. We are going to have to have a big Chop when you come out for Oasis next year.

Jonesey, Thanks a zillion times for the props. You must be breathless after all those !WOW, Great.
Hey Surfin tiki, you want me to tell you how to DO IT Now???
Sure!I used a bunch of burs, starting with a 3mm steel wheel that I Modified on a fine diamond bur to be a knife edge bur and with that I did all the initial lines Except the small round koru's. Then I used a Krause bur (pointed)to do those small circles and to clean the other lines a bit. Then a small fine diamond wheel to shape the long lines into a ribbon look. The same modified wheel I used for the hair after shaping the hair surface so it would not look all flat and straight. I have a lot more cleanup on him yet to do so I may need more burs to be re-shaped into useful shapes.
Hope that helps so now you can go do one OK, I'll expect it SOON.
Dear Clarita, thanks so Much, you know by now for my faces I Always try to have someone in there looking out at you, glad he found you!!
Thanks Babs, I appreciate you all talking about me..? Maybe I should just come out for a chop instead?
He is going through an Ugly stage at the moment needing a lot of clean up so I couldn't get many great photos.

The detail on this guy is super slick Ben!
I keep going back to the mouth... amazing!
The depth, detail and delicateness... totally lifelike!
Big congrats, even if you think he's a bit rough still... he's gonna blow doors when he's polished!
