Howdy Tc'ers,I've had this peice sit'n in the background for awhile now
wait'n to finally be finished,all he needed was to be sanded and stained.
Man I hate sand'n!!!!but about 6hrs later here he is finished at last.
This is my second version of the Hawaiin Eye tiki and Im pretty stoked
with how he turned out.Cheers Watango

Well for someone who Hates sanding as much as you do, this guy sure had a TON of it! This is an Excellent piece with a Superb finish. Now you must Really hate sanding!
I can show you tools that will make it Much easier!

Ben,glad you dig this peice,makes it worth the effort when
artists that you admire give your stuff the nod,but back to the
subject of sand'n any advice on ways to make this hideous task

For starters This type Sanding mop/flap is the Best one and the Only one to use on carvings. All the individual"fingers" get into all the little out of the way places you would normally sand by hand OR Ignore.. It is important to start with the heavy grits and work up to the finer ones as the high grits will just polish the stuff you are trying to remove as well as ruin the fine paper. You can get these all mounted on a 1/4" Shank in 4 grits and 3 different sizes.
Look HERE for the sales page from Enco Tool Supply and look HERE for the catalog page where you can see many other sanding surprises. Be sure to look at pages before and after this page And order a catalog, it's free!
Use these on a power drill , flex shaft or die grinder with speed control and I'm sure you will have a Different feeling when it comes time to sand.

Oh yeah, I've looked everywhere for these jobbies and this supplier seems to have the Best prices over anyon else. If anyone finds them cheaper please let me know?

Classic Poly Pop stylings on this guy with a silky smooth finish!
I hate sanding too, which is why I avoid it if at all possible. 
You've already learned that a textured finish is a good out from hours of sanding.

Polynesiac,thanks for the comp,he's carved out of hardwood
(REDGUM)so with heaps of sand'n it comes up like stone.
Lakes,thanks for stop'n by and the comp,Im with you, give me
a textured finish any day.I guess sandings like taxes soon
all later we all got to pay.
Iaojia,thank you, glad you like.I just used one coat of teak
(satin)and it really brought the peice to life.
It's a long weekend here so I had another full day to spend in the
shed so I got started on another lono peice,the wood is Acacia(wattle)
the same as I used for the small marq and carves fantastic.
Here's some progress pic's of where Im at so far,I've left plenty of log
for the head so hopefully I'll be able to get a bit more funky with the headress.

Great start on this guy!
The Acacia wood looks like it gets a little waxy after you carve it?
Cedar does that for me, and its another shortcut to not having to sand.
Love the textured surface!

the natural wood looks killer.
