Thanks all. I finished the last marq and this one using tips from BigT on a process he uses. My results are not up the level of the one he showed me but with more practice...?? It's just slow with unpredictable results for me now. Of course, the spalting is really what makes the difference. The spalting is why I decided to go with a more refined finish on this one.
Well Conga, I guess I began studying butts and legs in about the 7th or 8th grade. How I ended up carving male figures from that study is anyone's guess. Kind of disturbing if I think about it too long. These days I only study the human form using anatomy books...purely academic you understand.

Thanks Seeks - your return should liven things up around here.
This Pecan Marq is just under 3 feet.

Beautiful. The detail work you've put in on the base gives you such a big pay-off on the whole project.

As the professor says, the base adds that little extra to an already fantastic work...

Fabulous Amate, like others have said, the base is really great and creates a
separate focal point, it's like two carvings in one. You know what I mean, right?
Wonderful work, and that's what we've come to expect from you. Some would say
you are "in it to win it!"

Thanks for lookin' in and leaving your comments. I have been having fun with doing the carved bases. As Congatiki said, they are like two carvings in one and require a different mental zone to do the base...especially since this one had more detail. More mentall focus is needed and I have trouble slowing myself down to get there. Just a matter of more practice I hope. Everyone I do gives me new ideas for the next.

Cy/pjc - I may have already said it but I'm really enjoying doing the base work. I have more planned. Thanks for looking.
Now, back to the rough stuff.
I made a couple of attempts to paint the hoodoo designs on this guy but was not happy with the results. I may try to paint him again when it gets too hot to carve. For now, he will remain a UFO. (unfinished object) He is five feet tall.
Time to try something a little different.
