In the last couple of years I haven't read books hardly at all, I used to read a book every couple of days. Mermaid was the only one I made time for lately and completely enjoyed.

I met Joe Knetter at the same horror convention and mentioned mermaid to him - because his book he was selling also has zombies and lots of semen. Haven't read his yet. http://www.joeknetter.com/books.html

"zombies and lots of semen"
the next edition's back cover quotes keep comin', so to speak, thanks! cheers.

Hey martian, I picked up Joe Knetter's book ZOMBIE BUKKAKE based on your "recommendation" - man, that is much more messed up than MERMAID, which has zombies, sex and even zombie sex, but that's all peripheral to the main storyline, as opposed to BEING the storyline! But hey, not only is his book also self-published, but it got him quotes from the likes of Rob Zombie and a stint on The History Channel (!?!) So he's doing something right. Dig the cover, which isn't at all ambiguous as to the content...

Also here's a FB PM I recently received from fellow self-published author/exotica enthusiast TIKI CHRIS PINTO
http://wildwoodmurdermystery.com/
summing up why he enjoyed MERMAID, I'm sharing it here since I think he really "gets it" and these bullet points may inspire some of you to take the plunge....

Hey Will, just re-read some of your book again, paying more attention to the nuances. Here's a few things I really dug about it:

Tying music into scenes to help set the mood, some of the song titles paralleling the charachter's action. I like that device, use it myself sometimes. Really does bring some scenes to life.

I know the sadness you've gone through with your cat recently. I could feel it as you described your cat Buddy in the book. Last April, the same week Murder Behind The Closet Door dropped, a drunk-ass in a pickup killed our dog Snoopy, while my wife was walking him on the leash, in the grass. He nearly clipped her too. We were devastated. For weeks, the song "My Buddy" ran through my head.

At first, it was a little confusing with the switching around of realities. But you somehow were able to quickly make it easy to keep track. By the time they started morphing together, it was no problem following along. Damned good writing, to have so much going on and not let the reader get lost.

You have some seriously screwed up ideas for porn movies. You should produce them. It might revitalize the industry.

At times, Nick, Delores and Miles reminded me a little of Arthur Dent, Trillion and Zaphod from Hitchhiker's Guide, the way they interacted. Don't know if that was an inspiration or not. Also, I got a Muholland Drive vibe, especially towards the end.

I have to wonder how much of this you took from your own life experiences, and how much was your imagination. Obviously, the zombie Elvis is real.

These are just a few of the reasons I really liked your book. Cheers, CP

Sorry, martian, I hop around so many social media sites plugging various things, mine and other's, I never notice PMs unless they're sent directly to me. I read it, funny coincidence about PHANTOM OF THE LAKE, which I booked at the Parkway years ago. Thanks again for reading, and for the feedback, aloha.

btw my comedic crime novel DOWN A DARK ALLEY has several tiki references as well...no zombies, but lots of sex and action...

OK, OK, OK. You wore me down.

I just ordered "Down a Dark Alley". I'll start there first.

BTW, I love your essays in the Noir City Sentinel. The one for "King Creole" is a geek-fest cross-over gem.

Also these were great threads...

LOL, that key needs to be thrown away. I forgot about those early posts - people took me WAY too seriously! I've learned just not to go there unless it's in a forum I moderate myself.

Hope you dig DOWN A DARK ALLEY, more on its background here
http://www.facebook.com/downadarkalley
Thanks for the support. I initially wrote it in 1992 and when I went back and revised it earlier this year, updating the references to make it contemporary, I added even more tiki stuff.

btw thanks for the shout-out about my Noir City Sentinel column, "Mr Modern Noir," I actually reposted that particular piece, "Elvis Noir," on my blog http://willthrillville.blogspot.com/2010/01/king-creole-elvis-noir.html

All of my columns for the Sentinel are collected in the Annuals http://www.noircity.com/noircityware.html
it's a good cause to support, too, so become a subscriber!

btw the new issue of BACHELOR PAD MAGAZINE, #14, is now on sale, featuring my regular movie column, this one on Beatnik Cinema, but with all those eye-popping pinup pictures, who cares? Cheers.

btw I just scored a brand new column at Examiner.com, designated as "Oakland Indie Movie Examiner," I've posted two articles so far:
"The Long Lost Art of Old School Cool"
and
"The Walking Dead: Apocalypse Any Minute Now"
both of which should be of interest to anyone reading this particular post - if you enjoy the articles, please leave a comment
there or "like" on Facebook, share on Twitter, etc
thanks and cheers

I've been invited by NAKED GIRLS READING of San Francisco to be their special guest on Thursday, February 17. I'll be reading from MERMAID as well as my latest, LAVENDER BLONDE (which has exactly two tiki references, but that's two more than most books.) Stay tuned for updates.

NIGHTMARE #2

The test tube cover Frankenstein story is interesting - given "Bride of Frankenstein" also had a test tube mermaid of sorts...
