hang10tiki you give me smiles everyday.

=================================

I started this mug in January and worked on it every day. While in Alaska I organized all the photos and selected those to post. It's going to look like this was a fast process but it was really very slow.

First I added my name and copywrite to the bottom.

Now it was time to add some plants.

Next the bird.

I'm blocking out the design to make sure it all fits. Now the name of the restaurant.

I blew the name up larger from the telephone book advertisement. I put it on a clay slab.

I traced the outline.

I used a tool to remove excess clay.

More and more removed.

Back to the bird.

I had the ad and a photo of a similar bird as models.

I started to work on the detail for the bird and

for the flowers.

I added plants along the side of the tiki.

Now it was time to add the sign. I used small rolls of clay to secure it to the mug.

Now it's ready for fine tuning.

Woodgrain.

All done.

Thank you all for the visit. Wendy

RVICTOR thank you, those photos are coming up soon. I'm enjoying your swap goblet in progress.

VampiressRN there's more to show on the sculpt coming up. I'm so happy you like it.

hang10tiki I'm working hard to be worthy of that remark!

============================

Sacramento Crawl mug is actually named Cap City Crawl since we are the Capital of California.

Here's the next four days of work.

Now I've skipped to the back of the mug to add Palm Trees.

This photo shows the foliage added to the left side of the tiki.

Next a smaller palm tree.

I smoothed out the small palm and

then I smoothed out the tall palm and added pieces to make a sign.

Now the sign is smoothed out.

Let's see how it's looking now. I changed the foliage on the right side of the tiki too. I've carved lines down the entire mug.

After confirming with VampiressRN that the name of the crawl is officially Cap City Crawl I added that to the sign.

Now the sculpture is finished.

It's time to prepare the sculpture for molding.

Often I have made mold where after the slip has sat in the mold for awhile I need to top it off with more slip. If I don't the top of the mug will not be as thick as the rest of the mug and this can cause cracking when fired. So now I make the top hole into the mug very deep. I found a plastic container that was just right for the job.

I added clay to seal it in place.

Then I covered it with clay.

All done.

Now I studied my sculpture to decide where the mold pieces would be made. These pieces must pull off without hurting the cast mug. I drew lines in the clay top that will guide me once this sculpt it put into the mold box.

Next I devised a way to protect the bottom of the mug until I'm ready to pour that piece.

Perfect fit.

Oh what the heck, I'll just make the bottom using the same kind of plastic container. It will make this mold very heavy. Poor Dan.

Tomorrow the mold photos begin.

The Blue Kahuna I think it is. You'll soon see photos of why. I spent hours on each mug to make it better than the sculpture. Some projects are labors of love, I like to make all of my mugs with that in mind.

Tikiwahini you've been added. Thank you.

MaukaHale I'm old enough to remember that remark from way back when. Thank you!

Katiki gosh, did you just join Tiki Central? Welcome to my thread. I hope to see you here again. I've added you to the list.

hang10tiki thank you. I really couldn't have done this mug without starting 10 months in advance. It's very labor intensive in clean up and glazing.

============================

Anyone can sign up for a mug and after the crawl is over I will be shipping the mugs to those of you who are out of town.

MAKING THE FIVE PIECE MOLD IN FOUR STEPS.

My cold is still beating me up. I'll be back later with photos. Wendy

This is a mug that requires a five piece mold. If you have a mug that only takes a two piece mold check out the ingenious way that elika-tiki made his mold without all the stuff I'm showing here.

We set up our space with a washable tarp. We put together the size box that this mug will require.

Dan made sure all the clamps were tight.

I filled the bottom with my plastic blocks.

I found one that would support the top.

One for the bottom wasn't quite wide enough so

I cut it to fit. I love these ToysRUs blocks, it was the best idea I ever came up with for making molds.

Now it fits and I put them

into the mold box.

Now back to the sculpt and fixing it.

The bottom with my name is covered and

Dan made all these snakes. I use them to secure this plastic jar to the bottom of the sculpt.

I covered it completely with clay.

All done.

I checked to see that I had a support for this new end.

There it is sitting by the mold box and

In this photo it's in the box.

More tomorrow. Thank you for the visit. Wendy

Thanks for the shout-out Wendy! However my method quickly becomes unusable when it comes to making a 5-piece mold, which I think I'll need for my next mug. Looks like I need to take a trip to Toys R' Us... those bricks look quite useful!

elika-tiki your tubes and box is ingenious because you can use it for two piece molds over and over again. I'm looking forward to MadDogMike giving it a try.

The blocks save a lot of clay when doing multiple piece molds. They are worth the investment.

==================================

Next steps in making the 5 piece mold for the Sacramento Crawl mug due in October 2015.

On top of the blocks I begin to cover the plastic blocks.

Now that I've covered it with a layer it's time to

slow down and add pieces close to the mug.

I decided that one mold line would run all the way around the bottom of the mug so that's how I covered it for the first mold piece.

Next I worked on one side placing the clay up to the where the next mold line would occur. Then I smoothed it with a brush and water.

Now I'm pressing clay up to the other side to the mold line.

Now that I've smoothed it I have pressed into the clay so that bumps or locks will be formed on this first mold piece.

To judge how much plaster I need to mix I count how many cups of water to start with using this (4 cup) measuring cup.

I decided on filling it 8 times (32 cups) and poured that many into this mixing barrel.

MASKS ON! It's 1 of water to 2 of plaster using my sizes of cup and scoop.

While Dan runs the mixer I slowly shake in the plaster. Grade #1.

We mix until we get out all the lumps.

Once you have the amount of water to use you just add plaster until the mix looks like this on your hand. It's called buttermilk.

I used my cup to start pouring on the plaster gently

trying to prevent air bubbles from forming.

After covering the mug we poured the rest in along the side.

Wash everything fast or the plaster will set and your mixer and cups etc. will have a hard to remove shell on them.

When the plaster has set I carve the name into the slab. Crawl 15 #6. This is the 6th year I've made the mug for the crawl.

Removing the box shows a fun patchwork of blocks.

This shows how much clay I didn't need to use.

I cleaned the edge of the slab so that it wouldn't be sharp to touch.

Dan is my muscle man. He lifted the slab being careful so that the mug didn't come loose and crash on the floor.

He turned it over on the table so

that I could start to remove the blocks and clay. He got to wash the blocks too.

blocks off.

Clay removed.

If you have questions about any of the steps, please ask.

More tomorrow. Cheers, Wendy

Hi Wendy! I've actually followed your thread for a long time. I decided this mug was too good to miss out on! Someday I hope to order one of your 'wish list' mugs, but I can't decide what I want.
