I too had a great time this year. I especially appreciated how well organized and efficient the line for wrist bands was.

As far as the TJ theme goes, as long as the surf monkey wasn't overlooked and I was asked to buy chicklets at least 10 times, I'm all good with it.

As far as the burlesques goes, unless this was your first Mexican Zebra ride then you know the deal. It is a part of Tiki Oasis and should be no surprise. While everyone has their own opinion about kids obstructing the view (lucky boogers) I'll keep mine to myself. One thing that truly excites me about Tiki Oasis is that, I feel it is family friendly.

My highlight.
Lately is seems I get a chance at TO so see an act I'm a huge fan of but never thought I'd be able see live. Being originally form the Rt coast that is a pretty big list. Previously that was the Phantom Surfers. This year it was Los Straight Jackets w/ Big Sandy. Having seen them both play independently many times I just figured they didn't perform together.

I will never underestimate the power of Otto and Baby Doe.

To Otto, Baby Doe, room party hosts! and cool attendees
Muchas Gracias (that means thank you)

P.S. at least that stinky dude didn't show up this year and start poegoing to Jack Costanzo.

I rarely come out of lurk mode, and I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I gotta chime in with my 1/2 cent. This is the first of the 9 TO's I've attended where I didn't leave exhilarated. While I appreciate all the effort that goes into this, I'm beginning to think the event is getting too big for the hotel venue with all the downsides that carries with it. Attendees should not have to be woken up by a band playing loud as hell at 1am, nor again with a fire alarm, nor again with some drunk ass playing drums. Add to this the increasing costs of simply staying at that hotel for event and it is becoming something where the decision to automatically GO is no longer in the game plan. I overheard lots of people viewing Mojave and Caliente as a more manageable option for next year and I gotta say if it is going to cost me almost a grand to stay at the Hanalei I'll be thinking long and hard about my other Tiki event options. I also kinda feel that people's complaints aren't really being taken seriously, cuz there are far larger issues than somebody bringing a rooster to the event.
Sorry to be a downer, but I'm kinda bummed that TO ain't the glorious yearly event it used to be for me.

You are correct my friend. I was the devil door guy at Tiki Hell and I watched the fight from the door. It was early in the evening. Then at around 2:00 the cops made everyone lingering in the hall go into Tiki Hell and close the door. The alarm went off at 3:00 because it helped clear out the crowd still dancing in hell.

I'm just getting wind of the wildfire and I must say that I'm feeling pretty horrible to have caused so much anguish with my little baby boy chicken. He was just such a wonderful little guy and brought me so much joy, I felt I would share him with everyone. I seriously had no clue that my bringing him along would impede so badly on everyone elses happiness and sincerely apologize for this blunder. I don't know about everyone else, but this event is the single largest hilight of my life every year and causing discomfort to the ohana was never my intention. I don't know what else to say except that the consequences of my actions have probably resulted in losing my privileges to be part of this and I offer everyone my most sincere apologies.

The rooster was right below my window so I probably "suffered" as much as anyone. I am fully satisfied by your apology and hope you are accepted back. And hey, it fit in the theme.

I'm still blown away by the Musical Line-up at this year's event! Yes this was our first one, but we've been to other Tiki events, and the band line up at TO is just a notch above (probably two notches above) of anything else I've been too. I mean Jack Costanzo? That's just plain incredible. The guy played on a TON of Exotica and Latin Lounge LPs of the 50s, 60s, 70s. To see him live, and to talk to him at the exotica seminar was amazing. PLUS the DEBUT of Tiki Joe's Ocean. That's pretty damn impressive too! And then Marty's show that was fabulous! And that's just the tip of the iceberg (or maybe in this case I should say "it's just the rum float of the cocktail").

Hats off to Otto and Baby Doe for lining up such exciting and interesting acts.

Holy hell, I forgot about Don Tiki. We couldn't stay for that, but HELLO, that's another amazing feather in the cap. Does everyone realize how many times they've been rumored to play state-side and it hasn't happened. I think I correct in saying the event at Kahiki (which we were at) was the last time they were here. In any case, no other Tiki event can match the line-up this year (and some of them have pretty damn good line-ups too - I'm not knocking them, but just saying that TO really out does it)

Well, that's the story that was relayed to my by Coco Loco, who was in the elevator when the party crashing douches forced their way onto the elevator, then spewed forth a rash of sexist, racial, and homophobic epithets before purposely knocking the mug out of someone's hand, where-in a shard of that mug cut Vixen's leg. She also witnessed Esperanza slamming those guys to the ground while simultaneously punching an alarm button in the elevator - all of which she had to stay and relate to the police. This was my first Oasis where I got a call on my cell phone "I can't meet you right now in the room party because I'm being detained by the police!" Whaaaa?

So I guess the alarm that was triggered in the elevator was a short lived one, and there was a bigger fire alarm pull later, or something like that. Maybe we can get the CSI crew to do an investigation? This looks like a case for Detective Hamilton!

my roomie asked me to post this for her....

Oasis is over…and what a blast it was!

Voice is STILL not 100% from Los Straitjackets & Big Sandy, Vantiki’s killer pendants are dangling from my neck, Bowana’s moai mug has a proud space on my shelf, still recovering from drinking all those sour samples during Martin’s symposium, been adding new friends met while volunteering to my Facebook and trying to figure out why I am not still surrounded by so many people I adore partying their butts off with me!

I am surprised that so many people don’t just have fun/make friends/enjoy Oasis for what it is. Sure there are going to be things you aren’t into and there are going to be unexpected issues but hey..things do happen. As for…

Burlesque – if they are not your kids and the dancers don’t protest dancing in front of them then I say don’t worry about it. Too bad La Cholita (there was some talk she was booked) was not shakin’ her money maker up there this year—she would have had some of the adults blushing with her antics!

Kids – I don’t have kids. If I did I would never bring them to a weekend like Oasis. Or like Ohana. Or like Viva Las Vegas for that matter. The weekend is about one thing – partying. Sure you can throw in vendors and car shows and bands but guess what I won’t edit my antics because you don’t want your kid to be subject to rowdy behavior. I will however give you a dirty look and nasty words when you try to bring them into a room party at 2am. You can’t have it both ways…you either make your weekend adult or you make your weekend about your kids.I know when I see Otto out at a party at 3am his kids will never be with him. Its called being a responsible parent. Know that if you want to bring your kids to the event then its your responsibilty to MANAGE your children. Adults are coming there for escapism—not to play babysitter to strangers kids while they are no where to be found. (this seems to be happening every year more and more)

Hotel-If you don’t want to stay at The Crowne because its too expensive or because rowdy partiers won’t be quiet or because there may or may not be a rooster/drummer/fire alarm incident in the future then there are plenty of hotels around that area and of course you can stay at the sister hotels Tiki Oasis works with. Plenty of people do since they are only in their room to shower/sleep and would rather save their money on things like booze and tiki goods from the vendors.

Food-If you don’t like the food prices or the food offered bring your own. Our room had breakfast noshes and easy sandwhich fixings that came in handy when we rolled into bed at 4am and realized we were starving. Plus I have two words of advice for you next year – BLOODY MARY. At the sushi bar Chris (who pretty much rocks every year) can make you the best of both worlds – a meal and booze – which will have you forgetting you even wanted a hamburger in the first place.
Until additional options are offered either deal with the food issue or make other arrangements.

I am sure you have had to do something on vacation before when the hotel you stayed at was not to your liking. Adapt people!

Someone mentioned a non-aloholic drink bar. I think this would be AWESOME. Especially when the weekend is on the warm side.

Theme – who cares. Seriously. If Tiki Oasis were the same every year people would get bored and complain it was too much of the same thing all the time. Variety is the spice of tiki. The theme is nothing more than to have a jumping off point for ridiculous fun such as moustache contests, zombie makeup classes, marching band entrances, etc. If you don’t like the theme and base not going around it GREAT..then no one will have to listen to you complain!

How awesome is it that there are events such as Oasis/Caliente/Ohana/etc??? How lucky are we that people who have their fun boozing it up and collecting dusty ceramics get to party at so many different types of events and meet more and more new friends every year. Give me every gathering---fly me to them all. Let me say hi to my NorCal friends and to my SoCal friends..to the folks in NY and to those at the Mai Kai…lets go party in the desert or hell head off to the slopes for ski tiki. Just give me a mai tai and a reason to throw on a loud Hawaiian shirt and lets do this!

Few honorable mentions..Sleestak your band KILLED IT wandering the hallways, Tiki Hell your pufferfish disco ball was ridiculously awesome, Ikabod rocked as volunteer coordinator, Sabu really DOES have the biggest cactus of them all, Holden – you were missed at Oasis but your warehouse sale was a great way to kick off the weekend, and to Otto and Baby Doe you pretty much deal with 11.5 months of planning for our 1 weekend of partying. THANK YOU!

If people want to complain and aren’t happy with this and that and decide they don’t want to go…

GUESS WHAT?? Plenty of others will take your place and have the fun you are missing out on next year.

See you all at Tiki Oasis 2012 – how many more days until?

My two cents worth.....

As a 4 time Oasis attendee, I've made many observations, made many friends.drank a lot of adult beverages and had the time of my life 4 times.
There always seems to be some little issue afterward to bring a dark cloud over my post Oasis bliss, but that's all it is..a minor issue.
I don't think that anything that happened will deter me from returning...the benefits outweigh the deterrents.....where else can one see friends that only come together once a year, meet new friends from all over the country and even other country's....share an adult beverage in a room party that the hosts put their time and and expense to entertain a large group of people ,many of witch they have never met and expect nothing in return except to see you having a great time..... where else can you go and see a man in a suit with a rooster under his arm and hear a bevy of jokes about said appendage......a mad drummer.....a fire alarm at 3;30 am ...that time is still under discussion, a guy named Al with more energy than humanly possible....mermaids ...classic cars..whipped cream covered women..awesome bands and dancing girls...talented artists . the list could go on for pages yet it was crammed into three days for me.
OH. kids watching burlesque....that's the parents call...I was raised in Santa Cruz in the 60's and 70's...i saw a little of everything..i turned out OK.i think
It all comes down to this for me...The people you meet,The friends that you make, the memories that you go home with.and all the things strange and quirky that happened like the aforementioned that we get to talk and laugh about when we return to our daily routine.....end result ....Priceless....It's what makes Tiki Oasis what it is..Its what make new people want to come...Nay..envious that you went..

Thank You Otto
thank you Baby Doe

I had a blast

My two cents......see you next year..

There you go, a perfectly reasonable compromise. That way, only the people who WANT to see it, will see it. And it just may be better for the ladies, because they'll have a little better security, and not get cold, either.

Sombreros off to Baby Doe and Otto for another amazing Tiki Oasis event. We had the best time yet. The theme was wonderful and the Herb Alpert music brought back a flood of memories as my parents played it all the time.

I hate to rant on TC but I just have to put my 2 cents in here.
My boyfriend and I are in the camp that feel children present during the burlesque acts is inappropriate. Regardless of whether the parents feel it is healthy to expose their kids to this it is generally considered socially unacceptable. It makes most of us adults uncomfortable and dampens our experience. If this were a more commercialized event I'm fairly certain that would never fly. More importantly, it is not fair to the performers who probably rarely have to deal with this except at Oasis. I wonder if they have to temper their acts because of the very obvious handful of kids staring right up their crotches. This topic has been bantered around after every Oasis and these parents continue to ignore these concerns which in my opinion is incredibly rude. It's Tiki Oasis, not Woodstock.

Despite this one thorn we could not have had a better time.

Aloha and mahalo to all the organizers and volunteers who work so hard.

Darilyn and Brian

Roosters? Fire Alarms going off at 3:00am? Party crashers? Sounds like Tiki Oasis should be made into a documentary film! Sounds wild! Glad most of you had a good time!
