Here's a full recap of "The Art of Tiki: A Cocktail Showdown" hosted by Emeril Lagasse at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival:
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/02/19/bam-its-tiki-time-at-the-south-beach-wine-food-festival/

Our story includes reviews and ingredients for all the competing cocktails, a bonus cocktail recipe for The Mai-Kai’s Molokai Swizzle, plus a photo gallery of exclusive images.

The Mai-Kai’s Kern Mattei and Troy Gallant are busy preparing the Molokai Swizzle.

But the big news, beside the Judge’s Choice award won by Brian Miller, was the New York City bartender’s announcement that he will soon be leaving the Big Apple for Los Angeles. Grasping his $5,000 prize, Miller said he hopes to “take a seat at the big boys’ table” and “hopefully pick up where Don (the Beachcomber) left off.”

In our Week in Tiki feature this week, we also recap The Mai-Kai's "secret cocktails" event and preview the Legacy National Cocktail Competition, sponsored by Bacardi and held in Miami. Other news includes the Instro Summit surf music fest lineup, two special concerts in Tampa Bay, Chicago Area Tiki Tour tickets, and the auction of a massive collection of Tiki artifacts from Disneyland and Disney World.

Our weekly features spotlight LeRoy Schmaltz of Oceanic Arts, The Pegu Blog, Double Crown Records, and Hale Pele in Portland. The rum of the week, Ron Zacapa 23 from Guatemala, is featured in the Zacapa Hurricane cocktail.

The Week in Tiki (March 16, 2015): Miller to remain in Big Apple; Tiki weekenders sell out in Chicago, N.J.

http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/03/17/the-week-in-tiki-march-16-2015-miller-to-remain-in-big-apple-tiki-weekenders-sell-out-in-chicago-n-j/

This week’s top story is the sellout of two upcoming events: the Chicago Area Tiki Tour, and the Vintage Tiki Weekend in Wildwood, N.J. Also, tickets for Tiki Kon in the Pacific Northwest are selling fast. Tiki Kon is also looking for bartenders to complete in the next Iron Tikitender contest.

Lost Lake, one of the stops on the Chicago Area Tiki Tour.

Speaking of bartenders, award-winning Tiki barman Brian Miller has had a change of heart and decided to not make a move to the West Coast. The Tiki pirate said he realizes that “New York City is where I want to be right now.” Did someone make him an offer he couldn't refuse?

We also have updates on Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace swapping locations in the Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland, and a Tiki disappointment in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s historic bars contest.

Our weekly features spotlight artist Eric October, Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid’s new website, the music of Gold Dust Lounge, and the Tambu Lounge at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort:

The rum of the week, Mount Gay Eclipse, is featured in the The Monaco cocktail:

HH, noticed you were using the Orgeat Works orgeat in the Mai tai. What did you think of it vs others that are "store bought"?
I was recently trolling the old threads on TC for intel on orgeat (I need to buy some) and saw it, but not much of any real commentary on how it compares (but I did see you mention that the Bum recommends it. Maybe that's all I really need, come to think of it!)

Thanks!
Ryan

Ryan, the orgeat is great stuff. Probably the best I've had outside of homemade. Which isn't surprising since it's essentially Adam's homemade orgeat that he brought to market. It's very rich, unlike some of the thin commercial products. I haven't tried the Small Hand Foods orgeat, but I've heard it's comparable in quality. The only issue is the high shipping costs. If you live in the Northeast, I think there are some stores that carry it.

A little late this week. Got side-tracked by a visit to Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. Lots more on that coming up.

http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/04/02/the-week-in-tiki-march-30-2015-trader-sams-grog-grotto-soft-opening-miami-cocktail-week-schedule/

This week’s big news is the opening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. There are also updates on Miami Cocktail Week, Tales of the Cocktail tickets, and a new mug from Kevin Kidney. Plus: Montreal loses a classic Tiki venue, while Milwaukee may be gaining one.

Weekly features spotlight artist Tiki Tony, Robert Burr’s Rum Guide, Japanese band Kenny Sasaki & The Tiki Boys, and San Francisco’s historic Tonga Room. The rum of the week, Smith & Cross, is featured in the Captain’s Blood cocktail.
