Hey all, nube here. Can post pics later but I am building a tiki bar in my basement.
The bar is L shaped and I have built a cane bamboo front for it using cane from my
backyard. I have bought a couple of red cushioned bar stools from Steinmart as well.
The ceiling is a cedar lattice with puck lights sticking out casually every once in awhile.
I plan on doing the other side of the room by painting the walls dark blue, adding white
Christmas lights as starfields, perhaps with some LED's thrown in. The bottom half of
the wall I plan to use reed rolls (Menard's) to make a fence. Also, I plan on building
a sort of tiki walk in hut that has corner poles, half height sides, thatched roof,
and 3 sided couch with table in middle. Going for the night at the beach effect.
Big problem I have is with behind the bar. I have the kitchen drain which comes down
and sticks out about 8-10 inches, also have a window at the top to the left of that.
Ideas?
I have old guitar/pa speaker boxes thinking of using them with lighting for shelves.
Will need to re-do the bar top also as it is flush with the front and sides and needs
to stick out about 8 inches. Maybe bamboo flooring or stone or something. Have though about
stone for the back wall also.

Hi, I'm Rob, I've been making tiki drinks since 2000ish in college when my girlfriend bought me the first two Beachbum Berry books. Now that I'm a grown up I love having a fancy blender, filtered fridge ice-maker that crushes ice and all the ingredients required... things I only dreamed of in college. I joined cuz I have a few questions, enjoy the drinking!

Hey guys! I've been following along for many years now and didn't realize that I had never joined up! I've been collecting tiki accoutrements for a while and I'm finally putting together my very own mid-century style basement tiki lounge! I have tons of questions so I'll be spending even more time on here than before! Thanks for everything.

Hello, I'm Juan Cena. I'm probably best known as a commenter on Deadspin. I also post at The Outhouse and BellGab.

I have a Pinterest page called Luau Cindor. It's about my dream tiki-themed sports bar with a focus on NBA and College basketball. It has a lot of great Tiki and b-ball related pins, along with music, and photos from Asia, Oceania, Africa, and other exotic places.

Oh my you are new.

Sports bar and tiki, It does not, I mean you can't, it won't?

If video killed the radio star, then Sports bar killed the tiki bar star.

What the hell, good luck, welcome.

Tiki Bars and sports don't usually mix well. On the other hand, the Tiki references on the Luau Cindor Pinterest page are indeed worthy ones.

Here's one way to look at it.

Adding sports to a Tiki bar is bad.

Adding Tiki to a sports bar is good.

I think the killer is that sports is a loud cheering environment, while
tiki is (or should be) a more cool lounge type thing. (That buzzer kills the vibe)
A place where you and your associates plan to whack rival family's
to gain control of the west side. (Movie Casino reference)

Tiki bar = mixed drinks / Sports Bar = Beer and a shot.

Tiki bar food = exotic dishes from the far east / Sports bar food = Wings from Buffalo.

Sports types are more likely to associate Party City with tiki than say Witco, Not you, just sayin.

But hey if you can put the two together and love it go for it.
Me, I'm more smoky quite tiki lounge type.

Good luck.

Uh oh! You're gonna cause some folks to clutch their pearls! The tiki between the TV sets needs a cap on sideways.

I think tiki and sports can mix... As long as the sports are surfing, fire-eating, and semi-competitive zombie-imbibing.

Also - new here, too. But not new to tiki.
