Tiki bar = mixed drinks / Sports Bar = Beer and a shot.

Tiki bar food = exotic dishes from the far east / Sports bar food = Wings from Buffalo.

Sports types are more likely to associate Party City with tiki than say Witco, Not you, just sayin.

But hey if you can put the two together and love it go for it.
Me, I'm more smoky quite tiki lounge type.

Good luck.

In my general experience, the sports bars I've been to have been to only get noisy when it comes to bigger games. It's pretty quiet if its during the week (or at least general noise level).

Thanks, I've been trying to mix things up so as not to make the page more eclectic.

I'm posted pins for Tiki decor, and more authentic art from the Pacific/Asia/Africa/etc. Then adding a lot of retro pins. I added some music surfing, swimsuits, and things that if don't quite cross over into Tiki, rub up against it.

As for the b'ball, I'm trying to keep things retro. I'm trying to avoid pinning stuff from current players as much as possible (though one or two got through).

Hope y'all like it.

Aloha! New guy intro... My name is Jason, live in the exotic far western suburbs of Detroit. Married, 2 sons. Work for Ford in prototype.

I started off interested in finding ideas for redoing our basement to a tiki bar type atmosphere, but then I found the food/drink list and got distracted...
Thanks for a great resource site!

Jason

ALOHA! This is my first post. I live in the Central Coast of California, married for 26 years, have two teen-age boys and love tiki bars, mixing and drinking tropical drinks on my own, outrigger paddling and ukelele. I'm part-Hawaiian, so these things all help me feel connected to Hawaii wherever I am. I'm stoked to be on tiki central & looking forward to enjoying tiki culture with the rest of you! Ahui hoe!

Hi, I'm Carly, married with a 1 year old son here in Sarasota, FL. I've been lurking for a little but now, but I'm pretty new; I've never been to a tiki bar yet (though I'm planning on visiting the Mai Kai at my first opportunity. I just got a book by Sven and I'm on my way to becoming a true tikiphile.

Hey dudes and dudettes, I'm a newb around here (but have been lurking for months) and the intro thing seems to be the place to start, so here goes nothin'.

My name is Seth and I'm a 27 year old tiki novice in San Diego, CA. I grew up in the Chicago burbs watching Gilligan's Island reruns with my grandparents and sneaking swigs of Bacardi from their basement bar. you could say I fell in love with the idea of year round fun in the sun and umbrella laden drinks at a prettyy young age. While thrifting in Point Loma one day I stumbled across a Tiki Farm mug by Squid and really it was all down hill from there. I was in love instantly. I'm pretty much tiki crazy these days and have amassed a tidy little collection in the better part of a year. Obviously I love collecting mugs- though quality ones in the wild seem rather hard to come by in these parts. I also really enjoy Coco Joe's pieces and have recently got quite addicted to finding and playing old Hawaiian/lounge vinyls.

Anyway, I love this website and the cultural community it both facilitates and records. I hope to become a contributor in one form or another here soon. Mahalo!

Welcome to all the new folks and glad those of you who have been lurking are now posting. Sounds like you all have interesting backgrounds and plans for embracing Tiki in your homes. Don't forget to post any before, during and after pictures of your bar projects in the Home Tiki Bar forum. CHEERS

Hello all,

Iíve been lurking for a few months and have finally made it official by joining Tiki Central. My girlfriend and I live in western Massachusetts, are in our early 40s and are big fans classic cocktails, particularly those containing rum.

Last summer on a visit to Chicago (my hometown) we were having a drink at Three Dots and a Dash and discussing what to do with our basement, which we recently reclaimed after a tenant moved out. We looked around at the bar and it all became crystal clear Ė tiki bar! Being fans of mid-20th century pop culture, cocktails, escapism, exotica, and kitsch, itís perfect for our lives.

Iíve drawn so much inspiration from all the photos of home bars posted on Tiki Central and Iím grateful for all the detailed information. Iím just getting started on our basement bar but will post regular updates and photos to document the process and maybe even provide a little inspiration to others. Iím not sure how long it is going to take but I have a plan and a name for the bar Ė Cosmic Coconut.

Hey, thank you! I have noticed that I... er, WE, are on the low end of the age spectrum when it comes to the tiki cummunity. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, I mean we have plenty of more seasoned mentors, right? Also, it often strikes me while out tiki hunting and sometimes competing for finds with um, older gentlemen, that when I (we) am his age my collection will be absolutely epic. Anyway, I'm stoked to be here and it certainly helps that everybody seems pretty damned friendly. Now to just put some feelers out to the San Diego community and maybe make a few new friends...
