Friday November 26th, 2004 10PM No Cover

Well, Sven is finally home and getting back into the swing of things in Sunny Silverlake and it just seemed like this would be the perfect opportunity to throw him a welcome home party. Let’s celebrate his homecoming with some Tiki Time!

King Kukulele and The Friki Tikis (in some form) will perform music to digest turkey by, and with the help of the audience we would like to create a very special “Welcome Home” song for our friend Sven.

AND

Dominic Priore author of “Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile!” about the Beach Boys lost album, as well as the recently released “Beatsville” will join us to discuss and show a rare video of the Grandfather of Exotica music Eben Ahbez. Dominic Priore wrote the liner notes for the 1995 re-release of the Eben Ahbez album “Eden’s Island”, and tonight he will bring rare video from 1948 featuring Nat King Cole and Eben Ahbez who wrote the Cole hit “Nature Boy”.

ALSO

Living Legend Bill Tapia the 96 year old Hawaiian ukulele player plays tunes just for YOU, 75 years after playing for the Grand Opening of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Wai Ki Ki!!! Wahines beware!

PLUS

As the Kahiki breathed its last breath, the Book Of Tiki breathed its first. For four years now, the Book Of Tiki has been the definitive work explaining to the masses this treasure we call Polynesian Pop. Later it was released as a paperback. Now, you can take a sneak peak at The Book Of Tiki in its third incarnation, the Icons series. Only one copy exists in the United States and on Friday night you can see it at Tiki Taix.

AND

Lost to the world for 50 years, this vintage 8mm film was found in its canister in Leucadia, Ca. a whopping 2574 miles from where it was shot in Hawaii. Take a rare look at this gem and remember the good old days on your 5 minute tour of 1950’s Kauai.

ALSO

Beachbum Berry’s Taboo Table: Tiki Cuisine From Polynesian Restaurants of Yore is newly released and we’ll be taking a quick look at some of its treasures. Illustration by Kevin Kidney and cover art by Bosko!!

PLUS

Take a look at some video of the Hukilau 2004! You can get a better idea of why Tiki Taix VIII didn’t happen as scheduled in September. Too much Tiki Madness on both coasts could have cost the country to crack down the middle, so we went to Ft. Lauderdale for the sake of the country.

Join us for this one night only night one time. We'll be at Tiki Taix 1911 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park 90026 One block north of the lagoon.

Oh my, I guess I better be there, then...

I wanted to ad that Domenic Priore also was a valuable contributor to the Surfing Tiki chapter in The Book of Tiki.

And he is THE Paul Page specialist, having dug up and interviewed the man himself. Maybe we should play a couple of his favourite Paul Page tunes.

And really, if you have not seen "Beatsville" out from Outre Gallery Press, it is the BOT of Beatnik pop culture.

Cool! Unfortunately...well, actually in my own way "fortunately", I will be in Palm Springs reeeeeeelaxing at The Tropics.

Wish I had more notice! If you guys still haven't had the chance to see Bill Tapia, then don't miss him! (Oh, and if you haven't met Sven yet, then you can meet him too.)

Have fun!

SugarCaddyDaddy is right about the advance notice. I wish this show was easier to get together, a lot of times there are last minute changes and schedule conflicts and the worst case was the last two months which didn't even happen because I was working on the road. I'm just glad to be back and working on Tiki Taix. Hope enough of you can make it a party. SugarCaddyDaddy, hopefully I will be able to get the next Tiki Taix show cemented early enough to avoid a delay in publicity...we'll see. And enjoy the Tropics!

Thank you Denny, that was very nice of you. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even forgetting about being embarasssd by all the attention ...almost, if you just wouldn't have dedicated EVERY damn' song to me!
Well we know that embarrassment is like gasoline on the fire for the King.

Your rendition of Anarchy in the UK was my fave. Bill Tapia was in top form with the Friki Tikis backing him. And that early TV footage of Eden Ahbez meeting Nat King Cole was amazing!
