It is a copy of a Leeteg painting, done in Japan. And not a very good one, I might add!
But as for the rhyming, alliterative typo "Leetey of Tahiti"... all I can say is... ZAZZ!

Wow, so Barney Davis the ol' Pirate had his pal Leeteg's paintings mass produced in Japan? Wonder if that happened before or after Edgar split his head on a tree...
It certainly lacks the master's touch, but at least it is from his gallerist, who used to have an outlet in the A-frame of the Waikikian in Honululu...

The Davis gallery was the seller for Leeteg's works, it was located in Hawaii. As the price of his originals rocketed the Davis gallery sold these "authentic copies". Most(all?) of the Leetegs one sees on ebay are these prints/copies/repro's. The Davis label should always be on the back, with title and painting #.
They're pretty nice, especially considering the price of an original. For real info:

High bid didn't make reserve on this Leeteg copy the last time. It was reposted today with Buy It Now, and Santa gave it to me for Christmas. I guess Mrs. Claus didn't appreciate its "full nudity painting beauty."

Just to clarify, I actually did buy the infamous "Leetey" full nudity beauty painting. The signature clearly read "Leeteg of Tahiti, copy made in Japan", which was described in the auction listing. Although it is a copy, it is a much better reproduction than many of the the knock-offs I have seen -- just as Midnite Tiki said. Also, it is labeled as being from the Davis Gallery which makes it about as close to authentic as I can afford. Also, this exact painting is in the Barney Davis book.
Overall, I have to say I am really pleased with it and would recommend buying one of these repros -- if they ever come up at auction -- if you can't afford to fork over thousands for a geniune Leeteg velvet (which I can't). I think I have justified this purchase enough, so I'll stop now. Mahalo.

Here's an old ad I own from the Davis Gallery. I apologize for the slightly blurry photo:
Original Leeteegs were priced starting at $5000. Those famous copies made in Japan were sold at $35.00. The year was 1966.

Mahalo for showing us that ad, Sabu. Looks like the price of the copies has gone up, but the originals are still fetching a similar price to 1966. The funny thing is that Leeteg himself copied his own paintings, and there is some debate about how he did that. I wonder who the mystery artist(s) were in Japan because the one I bought looks awfully darn good.
