How great is that! Congrats Bungy, Ben, and family! What a great idea. Her hubby is obviously appreciative of her history. Things like this make me happy.

Wow...I have spent the whole afternoon reading this awesome thread. Just amazing story telling, I felt like I was right there in the stories. Congrats to Bungy and hubby and bringing life to full circle (back to live in such a magical place). Just ordered the book and am looking forward to more exciting stories.
Thanks to Ben for introducing Bungy to the board, these stories are fantastic and the pictures are priceless.

I just noticed this on the San Pedro community calendar:

Author Bungy Hedley book signing at Williams' Book Store
About the Book and life of the author:
View From the Top of the Mast is a true story of the adventures of a young gal who broke the stereotyped mold of the all male world in the late 1940 and 50s by crewing on sailboats from California to Hawaii, Tahiti and points beyond. She bought her first sailboat by weaving coconut palm hats at luaus.
Lady Weldon Hedley, aka Bungy as in bungee jumping, was raised in California right by the sea, where the sparkling blue Pacific was her private swimming pool. With her famous beach combing dad, the family combed beaches from Mexico to Oregon.
Many celebrities visited their home, which was constructed from driftwood. She met Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, waltzed with Rudy Vallee, and was escorted to her senior prom by Raymond Burr. She even played a joke on Humphrey Bogart.
View from the Top of the Mast is a humorous tale of Bungy's first twenty-two years of over seven decades of a life filled with the joy of living. Bungy says this book is dedicated to the reader who has a certain sense of adventure that is crying to get out.

libby and I are Blue with envy. ('Cause we're rowing aboard the Tonga Hut for "Blue Hawaii Tiki Night" tomorrow.) Congrats to Auntie B and "Uncle" R! When you're back from the Big Island, we recommend Table 5 at Trader Vic's, Beverly Hills. Just in case you're jonesing for a dash more romance...
Cheer and warm aloha,
SOK

Bungy...wasn't able to make your book signing later this afternoon as I had hoped. Got called to a project site in another San...San Dimas.
But I'm sure we'll meet in Pedro someday soon, and am so looking forward to it.
My day is not a total tiki loss however. On the way to San Dimas I am stopping off at the Bahooka for lunch. In fact...I'm in the parking lot right now waiting for them to open. So I'll be sure to toast you and Roland with something cool and refreshing as soon as I get inside.

Congrats to Bungy and Pedro. I'm sure you two will do more in your twilight than most people do in their whole lives.
Best if luck and hopes of many happy days together.

We had the good fortune to meet Bungy at Hukilau awhile back; I quite enjoyed reading Marilyn's "How Daddy became a Beachcomber."
I get a Flickr feed of any photos tagged "tiki" and this one popped up today from Orange County Archives - taken in front of Eli's shop on Highway 39 in Midway City, circa 1965. You can't see too much, but thought it should be added to this thread for family to see:

Rupe..
How do you set up a flickr feed ? I'd like to do that with TIKI tags too.

I forget how I stumbled onto this... but from this page:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/tiki/
in the lower left you should see that Orange RSS icon. Grab the link (right-click and choose Copy Link Location or whatever your browser says) from there and put it into your RSS reader. I use Bloglines, and it's pretty cool.
Have not really done this for loads of tags, mainly for specific friends' photos. Must have been exploring tags one night because doing a Search for "tiki" does not offer up the RSS feed link - although that Search may be going through the photo's description too, and not just tags.
A-ha: upon further experimenting, if you click anywhere on a photo's link tag of "tiki," that'll get you to the above address and give you the RSS link. You can presumably just alter the above address to any tag you like other than tiki to get the same results.
Good luck!

There's treasure buried all over the place in the Tiki Central archives. Here's another phenomenal thread I just stumbled across that pre-dated my TC awareness.
Bamboo Ben, I noticed several references to a 1946 Life Magazine article on your Grandfather, Eli Hedley, but I never saw a post of it. So I'll do the honors. From the January 21, 1946 issue of Life Magazine...
