Mindblowing! (facemelting?) I could look at that one for hours!
I'd love to see some of the fabric prints you've done if they're tropical/tiki inspired....

Hey Gang!
Not much in the art sector this week..Well, actually, I did finish about 15 pages of studies for an BIG commission, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share them for now....They're quite to my liking and I'm really stoked how they turned out,so I'll try to get some clearance to post those.....In the meantime, i have one beautiful object to share with y'all, but first....
Hewey:
Spent from 89-2002 designing tees and trunk/woven shirt prints whilst in the surf industry...I still have a friend who reps and sells prints(Hawaiian/etc.) from a whole pool of artists, but haven't really had time to work any....I used to dream of being able to work for Mambo, they've got the best Hawaiian shirt prints-hilarious!
Marcus Thorn:
Thanks man! You carvers are the people that impress me! Wow! all that time and skill! and strength! You need those big Popeye muscle arms! I can't imagine how you can work so big on some of those Wonders! keep it up man!
Sneaky:
yeah...the self-portrait does look kind of cartoony and dumb, but accurate! Ask me mates!
I'm working on that CD cover in that atom-smashing style, and it's been fun to go thru old pieces in a certain style/theme...I swear somebody else adds things to them, because i can't, for the life of me, remember certain details...painting fog I guess....
greentikipat:
I try to stay away from booze whilst painting because it just dulls me up and makes me tired....cold beverage....sounds good! when I'm painting at home, there's always the 9-9:30 wait for the stepkid to go to bed...dawdle-dawdle! Then after prayers and with her snug in her bed, I'll try to get back into the groove before bedtime...50-50 chance it comes back!
Life seems to tolerate painters...no special perks tho! except for the hypersensitive insight you can't tell people about or they'll put you in a home! Thanks for sharing your ritual!
Doug:
Thanks! the wandering Island is my favorite out of the two! Blue and brown always look great together...I see you use those two colors colors together,on wood surfaces as well! Wow!
And yes.....these are my warm-ups for the tiki magazine Art Show in November! i wasn't sure if it was a secret or not...Guess not! yet another opportunity to get to see your incredible work,Mr. Horne!
Paipo:
One of these days I'll drag out all my printed Tropical Shirt and Boardshort samples and print files to present a lil' print show when I get some time! I'll keep you posted! Thanks! I was telling my wife if we ever made it to the Islands and i needed to get a dayjob besides painting, that would be the vocation i would choose! I'd be doin it ol school with the gouache!
GROG:
Thanks! We also do sofa and couch prints to match the wallpaper! The walls of your cave need some snazzing up i think!
S-N-T:
You don't need to steal that! My wife would break your hands and that wouldn't do! Why don't you just save a piece of wall and we can put a mural in this style on it! All i need is the plane tickets,a place to crash,food/drink/other,and paints! Twould make a fine addition to your beautiful basement and yard/village!
well...here's the goods today! Jentiki and Bora-Boris stopped by the studio to spread the Ohana and to pick up "the Greeting Mug". why is it called that,Ken? Well, I'll tell you in a minute..the mug was given to me with the instructions to make it beautiful, sooooo here it is..
the front...

i did some tribal motifs in gold with gold puff paint raised over that surface with countless seals of satin clearcoat, that gives it a subtle sheen, just enough to excite the eyes...
Now here's the back, and the reason for the title...

as you can see I loosely based the back on "the Greeting" painting from a while back

not exact, but the space restraints guided the figures....the adding of the lil' hidden tiki
faces was an afterthought, but worked out quite well....

That's it for now...I promise to get some painting done and posted soon! Thanks for dropping by!

Mr. LLT,
I must say, your work is...
Well, I can't really put it into words. All I know is that I love it!
I can be having a really bad day, sit down at the computer, go through your thread, slowly looking at the pictures and feel the stress slide away as a smile creeps across my face.
It is both manic and relaxing at the same time.
Does that make sense?

That is one fine mug LLT. And I love the "Little Lost" style that runs through
all of your work, the designs are wonderful and I wish I could carve them.
Always fun to see what's happening over here.

Ken,
Thanks so much for "The Greeting" mug! I took it out at dinner with Boris and Hiphipahula last night and couldn't stop turning it in my hands and looking at it. I love it! Thanks also for the hospitality and the chance to look around your studio with all the new stuff that wasn't there when I visited last. I'm glad I got to see the rocketship decanter before it ships off to Chicago, since I know I won't be able to buy it! It looks even cooler in person than it does in the pictures! I feel lucky to have such a fun, talented friend!

Ben,
Sorry I didn't make it to your store yesterday! Kinny and Boris dragged me off to get some lunch, and there went the day!

I did have the honors along with Trader Tom & Ilene of being greeted by "The Greeting" Mug, Boris & Jen in person! This lil' moai is a fantastic work of art! Jen was absolutely in mug heaven and "The Greeting" mug stole the show! Absolutely Beautiful! What a unbelievable art piece for Jen to add to her collection and her life. HiPhiPaHuLa!

Hey kids!
well, i just got permission to share some of the studies for this 4-canvas commission I've acquired by a most gracious Mystery Patron! Yippee! But first.....
Heath:
Manic and relaxing...Yup! You nailed it in three words! Glad i can smiles to the ohana!
VampiressRN:
Thank you! I just hate the fact that the pictures never carry that whole essence of a good piece, only a portion of it....
congatiki:
thanks for the visit and liking the mug! that "Little Lost" style you refer to is kind of wired
into the hands and brain....can't do nuthin about it....
and i think you could totally carve some of those designs real swell!
Ben:
Happy Anniversary!
Glad you like the mug! Has anyone mentioned that you need a mug?
I'm thinkin, the way we conduct our lives with no regard to physical or mental safety-that
we'll be roommates at the funny Farm in about 10 years, not 20!
Jen:
Thank you! It was your idea to throw a mug at me,so this creation wouldn't be around if it weren't for you! it was fun sharing the studio and having lunch with you and Bora-Boris!
That lunch made me toot a lot later in the evening, tho!
Hip:
Hearing such kind words from such an esteemed mug aficionado is truly an Honor! Thanks!
Now here's some art i was doin' on Friday for this commission...It deals with the journey of life, and the stages of that life from birth to death...
here's what i gots so far in the developmental stages.....

I'll let the sketches and the notes form a storyline,as I typed a whole explanation to the Mystery Patron, and I have to get these paintings ready for the London Luau!
Cheerio!

Not any more mate After the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Mambo’s “loud shirt” range gained acceptance with the middle aged folk of Australia (Mambo supplied athletes casual uniforms, and uniforms for the ceremonies). Naturally the youth skate/surf market would no longer touch it (which is where Mambo was originally targeted). Mambo called in some gun market research firm, who told them they were no longer cool in the eyes of the youth. So despite the loud shirts being their best selling range at the time, they pulled the plug on them on them lest the cashed up kiddies see them as ‘uncool’. Now Mambo is just the same as any other big surf/skate brand like Ripcurl, Billabong etc. fashionable, but none of the social satire that used to distinguish them from the pack. RIP loud shirts

On a brighter note, that mug is awesome, and the commission series looks like it’s coming along great too!
