Here's a simple upgrade. Robertshaw makes this inexpensive digital thermostat that you can add your own detail to. It has a clear outer cover that you dont have to use. They recommend either painting the inside of the cover the color of your walls or cut out a piece of wallpaper.
I just printed out a tapa pattern on paper and......

Bongofury, nice! Another thing I've found adds some camo to the suburban jungle is painting heating vents brown or another color to match your matting/bamboo etc. Too many times I've seen a brilliant facsimile of paradise given away by the white metal vent in the wall or floor.
