Captain,

I think a visual is in order here.

Lava Bowl:
http://www.tikiroom.net/gallery/othermakers/aaa

This bowl gives you the ability to burn off some brandy or 151 in the center of the volcano.

Hula Bowl:
http://www.tikiroom.net/gallery/omc/aaz
Large Capacity bowl which allows for multi-straw sipping

Scorpion Bowl:

Usually smaller than a hula bowl, but also allows for multi-straw fun.

I've come to the right place. Mahalo and Muchas Gracias.
I remember my first sip out of a flaming volcano bowl. I was 21 and lived a fairly spartan lifestyle. Only possesions were a mattress, a blanket, three surfboards and a change of clothes.
But that volcano bowl was like stepping into a larger world...a world of knick knacks and Herb Alpert LP's.

Ceramic clam shells are often used for scorpion bowls:

Indeed, I've had more Scorpions out of clamshells than actual Scorpion bowls! Hale Hawaii serves theirs in small 3-4 person shells, while Sabu and I serve ours in a big-ass 8-10 person shell. Sabu actually has a real, full-size giant clamshell we tried to use once, but the shell alone weighs about 30 pounds! This makes it rather unwieldly to fill with booze and then carry aflame to the waiting masses (to chanting and tribal drum beats, of course...). We were thinking of building a litter to carry it on (think "Farrell's Zoo", but without the plastic animals), but I think he should use the clamshell for a fountain instead...
