Hello TC'ers,
If you live in Miami or West Palm Beach, please consider coming to a concert of orchestral exotica and Asian-inspired music on August 25 & 26, presented by Project Copernicus.
My piece "L'Ours Chinois" ('The Chinese Bear') is first on the program, and will feature violinist Helen Liu (whom you may know from WAITIKI, as "Mistress Helenini") as its soloist. I was asked to orchestrate "L'Ours" for Project Copernicus, after their conductor (Chung Park) heard the original version on "Rendezvous in Okonkuluku" (the new WAITIKI release). I will be in the orchestra as well, as its double bassist. It is scored for 10 players and violin soloist.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with L'Ours Chinois, I have posted a detailed description of the piece, and its influences (Martin Denny, Fritz Kreisler, Les Baxter, and Maurice Ravel) at my website: http://randywong.net/lourschinois.pdf.
The other pieces on the program are exotic works by truly dedicated composers, whom I am very honored to be programmed with:
ANGEL LAM: "Empty Mountain, Spirit Rain"
STEVE DANYEW: "Lhotse"
RYOJIRO SATO: "GEN"
Angel Lam's piece has actually just been recorded by Yo-Yo Ma, the Chicago Symphony, and the Silk Road Ensemble!! It is the bonus track on the disc "New Impossibilities," which incidentally is on sale this week at Barnes & Noble.
My guess is that, if you were at the Hukilau, and liked the Drasnin performance, then this just might be your cup of tea.
More later. Hope to see you there!

The World Premiere on Saturday received standing ovations from several people in attendance, and Sunday's performance was quite well-received too. We got some great reviews in the Palm Beach Post and Miami Herald. You can read them here:

My thanks to Mistress Helenini for her beautiful playing, as well as all the others in Project Copernicus who turned my piece into a work of art. Because of the success we had (i.e. two great reviews in mainstream publications!), you can trust that this won't be the last you hear of me composing orchestral exotica work.
Finally, you can hear the piece at my Myspace:

Congrats to the Professah; this is what's called bearing the torch for this music. In their day, the greats were just creating music which involved many of their interests, which resulted in the fusion of different styles, and won the hearts of many different kinds of audiences. The same is happening here; this is not simply the re-creation of this music for nostalgia's sake, or to capitalize on a new "thing." This is a true contribution to the legacy of this music, opening new doors by fusing different styles and musicians from different backgrounds for an audience not normally associated with Exotica.
Okonkulukuuuuu!!!!
