Check out this cool blog post about Plas Johnson: even if you've never heard of him, you've HEARD him. He played the sax intro on Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther" theme. The Licorice Pizza blog has a nice looking download. Read the entry to find out about the Les Baxter connection!

Qoute:Johnson was a favorite of Capitol star, Les Baxter, who wrote solos specially for him on African Jazz and Tamboo!.
I have to disagree here.
Les Baxter did not write the solos for Plas Johnson. These were improvised by Plas. Also, Plas Johnson did not play on Tamboo. He did play on African Jazz, Jungle Jazz, Skins, Teen Drums and a few other albums as well.
I interviewed Plas Johnson and he clarified this to me years ago. Someday I'll get this published.
Plas still plays in LA too!!!
Cheers and Mahalo,
Jeff
