The only way I know how to carve is to poke a sharp stick at a spinning log
This is my first moai

'Tis a thistle its true , but in my , and the Nobel Thistle's defence , it is said the the humble weed sounded the alarm , and warned of approaching invaders , and thus, is a protector to the Highland folk.
Actually , I liked the roundness of the Tekoteko that Alexdog did out of hyper-tufa , and figured that lathe-work fits into TC somewhere .
And , I come from the land of Hei-Tiki , so there
a progress shot

Only one progress shot?
Just kidding, give it time, you're most likely going to end up trying your hand at carving something after you take it off the lathe!

Yep , I will be carving it , to define the thistle head , and maybe a leaf or two on the stem . It is a 'split turning', the end result being two corbels for a mantelpiece . Sort of like this .

It would be a bloody big pendant mate
It is for an elderly friend , our local kilt-maker's lounge fireplace. She had the coal grate removed , and replaced with a gas one , with the assistance of the local council . In the process they demolished the fire surround .
Art follows function

Great work there A.S. .
I have not turned any pens , nothing quite so small . If I ever come across the gear , and the kits I will give it a go .
The smallest I've done so far are Spurtles and Cipin .

Thanks Ben .
two eyes huh , just above the bulging cheeks , below the long ears eh ,
A Bugs Bunny tiki , with teeth
The plank ? if you mean the one balanced on to of the 'moai' , that is sap Rimu (red pine). Thats the Mantle .
The turned piece is Tawhairaunui (red beech) , and the disposable end caps , for mounting on the lathe due to the split turning process , are Oak .
And the lathe , yep , NZ's finest , a Nova DVR XP

Just make sure you use the"Chicklet Teeth" and you'll be in great shape. (chainsaw tiki joke)
