Great thread! As an enthusiastic fan of tiki, ancient mayan/aztec/olmec art and lucha libre, I support this thread whole-heartedly. Viva Mexico!

That's because most of the Mexicans are over here in the USA.

Tiki Mai Kai cannibal trio

Indiana Jones Idol

Mexico Pre Hispanic sculpture.

So, I think, the mystery of the origin of the Mai Kai three cannibals is solved.

Look to GROG like idol is depiction of female giving birth.

Zeta mi amigo, nice to see you back! I am going to have to go with Grog on this one, looks more child-birth than Cannibal.

Well, there are those that theorize that the "Cannibals" are actually "Birthers": The big belly one being pregnant, than the two others giving birth seated. Like it is done in many indigenous societies.

According to historians, the Tahitians practiced infanticide - but not cannibalism. The Marquesans did, though. These Tikis are Marquesan in design. I am sure of that.

Bigbro,

Never thought about the birthing theory, makes sense.

Here is a version of the three Cannibals from the Luau in Canada that seems to go with that idea.

R.I.P. Juan Gabriel. Author of The song "Noa Noa" (rose wood) about a tiki bar...

Cuando quieras tu
divertirte mas
y bailar sin fin
yo se de un lugar
que te llevare (vamos al noa)
y disfrutaras (vamos al noa)
de una noche que
nunca olvidaras

quieres bailar esta noche

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar
vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar

este es un lugar de ambiente
donde todo es diferente
donde siempre alegremente
bailara toda la noche
alli

este es un lugar de ambiente
donde todo es diferente
donde siempre alegremente
bailaras toda la noche
alli...

...esta noche te invito a bailar esta noche mi amor...

...quieres bailar esta noche

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar
he he!

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar

vamos al noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa, noa-noa
noa vamos a bailar...
