Tom Slick and LLT, you kids be nice, remember I said I would be re-gifting the clock to a tiki friend.

Got this from a family member ... ouch!

In their defense they know how awful it is.

I'll have to re-gift it to a tiki friend ... so tiki friends beware, ha.

It somehow found its way to an "antique" shop in Martinez! [I posted about "the find" in the original
Target thread)

Just so you know, it isn't just Tiki collectors who get hideous gifts. My aunt has collected frogs for years, here's one of the gifts she got from an assumedly well-meaning friend

In earthquake country you can always use the excuse that a trembler knocked it to the floor and it broke.

Got one of these bad boys a while ago from a well-intending family member. Left it outside in the sunniest area I could find until it just disintegrated. I have a few gems around that I just feel bad about getting rid of in case the giver shows up.

Such is the subculture we've chosen I guess.

Pretty much this. I also tell them (before they get anything), look, I'm a huge tiki snob It's pretty unlikely that any off the shelf item you can buy for me is going to get used, so probably the best thing to do is not buy me tiki stuff.

AHAHAHA, I dig all the bad items shared... even the frog.

I'd save it all for a backyard party with folks not so in the loop. If it breaks or walks away no worries. Asides, most will be far too drunk with a good time to notice that Party City, and Hobby Lobby through up in your back yard.

Friend at work found out I was into tikis, and nothing says tiki like a hut with a pinata hanging on it.

The real issue: Is a bad tiki gift better than no tiki gift at all?

No it is not, because you might be forced to display the piece with your good Tiki collection the next time the giver comes over.
