"Tiki is so Gay !!"

Ever hear that flippant remark from non-Tikiphiles who just don't get it ?? I guess it must be their knee jerk reaction to all of the flowery shirts, umbrella drinks, elevator music, and cute ceramic mugs. (<--- Sarcasm)

Well on one particular Tiki outing, I found that statement to be 100% accurate.

Let's all take a visit to Palm Springs' #1 Gay bar... Toucans Tiki Lounge !!

So with all the Tiki peeps in town for Caliente 2013, making side trips to the Shag Store, M Modern, Lyons, Tropicale, Ace Swim Club, Sherman's Deli, etc. etc., I saw not one Facebook Check In to this place, the ONLY Tiki bar in town. What's up with that ??

Well I had this place high on my Tiki itinerary. So with 90 minutes to kill between films at the Palm Springs Film Noir Festival, I decided to check it out.

So let's see. Tikis... check. Faux rock waterfall... check. Bamboo thatch... check. Polynesian murals... check. Total sausage fest (Haha)... check.

Yup, this place was a bonafide Tiki bar.

Plus what other Tiki bar has (count 'em) THREE disco balls and a big screen TV with Village People music videos in regular rotation (which I would have assumed to be a cliche, but nope it was reality).

Tiki Fabulous !!

The thing that really annoyed me however were the surf boards. I dunno why but I despise surf boards inside the Tiki bar.

And how were the cocktails ?? Well I asked the bartender if they had Tropical cocktails on the menu, he said not really but he could mix me whatever I wanted. I asked if he could make a Zombie, and he replied "No problem". He did warn me twice that it was a really expensive drink ($11) and really really strong (three quarters alcohol) but I said "Bring it on".

After mixing the cocktail and placing in front of me, he waited in anticipation for me to take a sip to validate its authenticity. Now while a bit crude, I did recognize the drink as that 1934 classic. "Yup, that's a Zombie all right", I said.

And later after returning to the film fest, that drink hit me like a ton of bricks sitting in my empty stomach. I nodded off for several minutes and missed key plot points of a rarely screened film.

So for those of you who might be dismissive that a Gay bar can be Tiki, let me state that Toucans makes a WAY better Zombie than the pathetic fruit punch version they serve at Trader Vic's.

It was pretty dead on that Friday afternoon but I'll have to return on a weekend late night when I understand it really gets Tiki flamboyant. Maybe in Oct for Rory's next event. Anyone else game ?? I think I'll drag BigTikiDude with me.

John-O. I never want to see the words "Drag" and "Big Tiki Dude" in the same sentence again, especially in the context of a gay tiki bar!

Looks fun! I would think that they would want to keep the wangs on their tikis. I guess those silly missionaries made it all the way to Palm Springs...

Never thought I'd see a Wholey's reference on TC! HA!

Unfortunately, the Atlanta Trader Vic's is turning into a drag queen hangout on Thursday nights...

I don't think they'd have to look very far to find genuine wahines, and I can only imagine what these bozos/bozettes sound like. I think real tikiphiles should register their opinions about this with Trader Vic's management.

TVs should stand for Trader Vic's, and not anything else.
