aloha Tiki crew,
i think the Tiki has been with me most of my life one way or another,
though the realisation that all those thoughts and experiences were all
housed under the great thatched fale of Tiki, came later.
man, was i stoked to find your site!!!
the *desert wasteland*, that was the late 70's/80's didn't just wilt the
magnificent flower of tiki culture, but a lot of other cool aspects of
popular cultures of the time, from my point of view anyways..
..thank the gods that the *retro* force is strong.
no names chosen yet for the Tiki bar&lounge but this will eventually be the lounge part..
the entire roof and the wall to the right will be ripped out and replaced, in due course,
and most of the interior will be clad with these bamboo ply sheets that found me..
..i've collected some bamboo, a lot more since..
..our new pup *loving* the off-cuts while i was trimming up the bamboo..
..old cars make good bamboo racks...
..friends, i'm sooo hangin' out to get the other stuff unpacked and on the walls etc.,
besides i need the room it's takin' up, for all my other crap.
the bar will be built outside and adjoining the lounge where the window is on the wall to the right.
cheers for now.. bob.

aloha friends,
i found your site while searching out patterns for Tiki carving,
to put into some coconut wood i had saved.
the two masks are finished but i'm not sure what coating they'll have yet,
depending on whether they live inside or out later on.
the larger one, about 1.1 metres tall, still needs a little detail work around the
mouth, eyes, and pineapple.
so these are my first attempts at tiki carving..can't see much detail in photo though..
..and these are some of my recently found treasures, that weren't buried too deep in the shed.
the mask to the right of centre was gifted to me by an uncle&aunt who brought it back as a momento
of their south seas vacation, early seventies, the rest i found at op-shops/garage sales.
thanks to everybody for their incredibly inspiring stuff.
cheers, bob

Your lounge is gonna look great Bob. Your carvings are gonna be great also. Carve deeper!
The purchased masks for the lounge look to be African style made in Bali though, at least on the iPhone. I like your two masks better for your lounge.
Cheers,
Erik the Red

mahalo friends,
Erik, whenever i see your user-name, the image of you chillin' at Matt Reese' awesome Lava Flow
instantly comes to mind... classic.
cheers Bonj.
the above couple pictures don't show much detail, so here's my two masks again...
and these two are the ones left of centre...
which i imagine to be papuan...but not entirely sure.
because of our close proximity to bali, there is a *lot* of stuff around perth that comes
from there, and i do have a couple bits and pieces but they will live outside where they
can happily take on a weathered look... shouldn't take too long, holy moly it's been hot this summer!!!
cheers, bob

You are correct. Now that i'm at the desk top. Those are PNG style.
Left of center is juuust fine. Center being key.
Can't wait to see more progress on the lounge.
Erik

mahalo friends,
most of the stuff needed to rebuild the roof for the lounge is ready,
just need to nail some mates down as help, sometimes not easy.
in the meantime, i'd like to post some more stuff on this thread,
and when i get my act together i'll put the rest in the more appropriate areas of the forum.
first is this wicked little wahine lamp (355mm/14inch), that the life size wahine
beat me to at a garage sale, then turned around and gifted to me, bless her soul.
her head has been broken off...er...little wahine...then mended at some stage and is
not noticeable to the casual observer.
next is this scepter (760mm/30inch) that i bought for some ridiculous amount, 50 cents i think.
some detail shots...
which, i think, also looks papuan and seems to be quite old.
cheers for now... bob

Offer some Little Creatures Pale Ale as payment... might encourage some helpers! I know I'd be swayed if I was in the West.

aloha Bonj,
the thought of bribery did cross my mind, but then it dawned on me that i might never
get rid of the bastards!... no, it'll be buggery and the lash... same as always.
heh heh heh... have you tried anything coming out of the sail & anchor?... some very nice brews.
cheers...bob

hehehehehe... No, I haven't tried anything from there. I haven't been to Perth yet, so I'm limited to only what you send across.
The buggery and the lash might attract a whole different subset of helpers

aloha friends,
started moving all the junk out of the lounge area ready for the building work and
thought i'd share a picture of some more stuff before i moved it into the shed with
the rest.
the set of shelves are my latest find and stand 1.6m/5'3" tall.
this corner, which is hidden from view to the right in the first photo of the lounge,
is normally where i keep my music equipment and humble vinyl collection that i moved
last winter in case the old roof leaked...one less thing to worry about soon i hope.
there are still coopers at work in the swan valley, one of western australias' oldest
wine producing areas, and the cask on the bottom shelf is the product of their labour.
it holds about six litres or one and a half gallons, and when filled with rum should keep
us going for a night or two.
cheers...bob
