Good news!
Mango the Fertility God
gets to keep his snippy.
She liked it.
Normally I don't show till I have something to show.
The verdict is still out on this one.
Palm is funny in the stages it goes through.
Starts out too fresh & ends up too rotten.
Catch it at the right time & it's the best.
This is the next 5 ft past that last fat boy I did
& it's not much better than the first 3 ft.
It's like carving wet smelly rope & the center
falls apart in your hand.
I'll work it a lil more but it won't be the best.
It looked so good at first & I still have a 5 ft
piece left.
I know,
I'll give it to Tom.

Never seen a log like this one. its soggy, stinky and you can actually push on it and water comes out. If you need to borrow my extensive knowledge and experience with crappy wood I will gladly share. I will tell you that you removed the best part for carving - whoever told you to "carve deeper" should re-evaluate their philosophy. KISS it and be done with it!

This thing was like carving a fern Tiki.
You know, one of those carved out of ficus roots
or something, but, wet.
Yuck.
When it drys it will firm up. Stain & poly & it
will be fine.
I was lucky to ruff the shape out of it.
Forget any detail.
Not one of my faves.
Next up
I was so pleased with Mango the pendant
I'm going to try a gear shift knob
for my 53 chevy.
It's a column shift.

Here's Mangos brother Shifty.
Took these pictures &
I'm so pleased with my
delicate lil carving.
10 minutes later,
after a back flip off the bench.
Glued, doweled & clamped, he's drying now.
Guess we'll see how that goes.

I told ya so - you needed to cut him off the base! Its better that he broke now than when he was finished and installed. Bummer! Hope the dowels work.

Ouchy Will carve that hurts. Hang10 says the worst sound ever is the slurp of an empty tiki mug but I think the snap of a beautiful tiki is worse. Hope he heals.

Gorilla glue will fix anything! I have no doubt that you will restore him to his full former glory. Saturday when you see Tom give him a thump on the head for that "I told you so"!

A very nice piece with a lot of expression on his face. I'm glad you were able to fix it.

yeah, going that thin on a shift knob was pretty ambitious!
but still a neat little guy for sure...he'd look cool perched on a beer tap!
