Best wood to use? |

I'm located in MD and want to learn to carve tiki's. What is the best kind of wood to use since there is no palm to get ahold of??

Link up with some local woodcarving guys & talk to them about local varieties of wood that carve well. Chances are they'll also have some advice on how to find some, and help you with tool selection. I think they have cypress in MD and that works...

If you're carving small like pendants you could try bass wood it's soft. That could be a good thing to start out with.

Poplar carves easy, and takes stain very well.
The grain patterns are noticeable.
Basswood and Tupelo are common for duck carving, so they should work easily.
The grain patterns are more subtle.
