Ok, so I'm a bit of a hotel snob. Are there any upscale, non-mega sized hotels within a few miles of the Mai Kai?

It's about a mile away from the Mai Kai.
REAL Tikiphiles however stay in mid-century econo dumps !! I was ashamed with myself for booking it.

I have no idea what exactly you are looking for, but I can recommend Lago Mar as having historical weight and perhaps the right experience for you. The place does have connections to the Mai-Kai, but they are pretty obscure, and it is still about 15 minutes from the Mai-Kai itself though.
Hey, Jayne Mansfield stayed there...

I second the Lago Mar recommendation. I've been staying there since I was a kid. What's the connection to Mai Kai?
