Yes, Pele is a Goddess. But this figure is still inspired by Pele ~ "In an article in Man, February 1932, Harry Beasley suggests that the figure is connected to Pele, goddess of volcanoes" Maybe Pele's lover? You have to respect a man who has the coconuts to do the horizontal hula with the Volcano Goddess!

I wasn't too thrilled with the Pele theme, but, I have since changed my mind and can't wait to finish what I have started. This has sitting around in my box of rejects. It now has a new purpose - lets see if I can pull off what I have in mind??

Researching... Pele... volcano... fire... making my head hurt...
Broke a tooth on Saturday night, finally got it filled today, so now I can go back to concentrating on what is important, namely, the Tiki Art Swap!

Thinking of a couple things for mine.... possibly trying my hand at black velvet painting if I can find the proper velvet and its not too expensive. I wonder though if water mixable oils will work on it the same way as regular oils? I can't use plain oil paints because of my athsma/allergies. I don't suppose acrylic would work as well would it? Anyone know what would work, and where to get said velvet at a decent price?

Tiger, I'm afraid I'm of no help there. My only painting experience is with latex paint and a roller.

Tigertail, You can use any type of paint you want on velvet. One thing to remember when painting velvets is how do you want to
approach it. Velvet painters like Leeteg or Heather Watts apply several light coats to the velvet building up opacity. This style of painting is time consuming,
needs tons of patience, but is well worth it. The Tijuanna velvet style is quicker where paint is literally flooded or jammed into the velvet for fast opacity and impact.
Either way I would suggest acrylic paint as it dries fast and you can move forward quickly. Blending paint extensively on velvet fabric can turn muddy and mess with the nap of your fabric if it is on the taller side. I do some velvets but still havnt found a great velvet I like yet so I use velveteen. It has a nice short, thick nap that paint sits on top of nicely. Just go to your Joanns or local fabric store and get some black velveteen. i think its about 7 to 10 dollars a yard. I think a good way to start is cut up squares and practice. Dont worry about your painting at first just get a good feel for how the paint goes down and go from there.

Thanks MP that helps a lot! Velveteen sounds kind of like flocked ribbon (you know like those really wide red "velvet" ribbons you can get at Christmas) which if it is anything like that, would be a heck of lot easier to work with. Really appreciate the tips and am very relieved to hear acrylic will work knowing how very slow oils dry. I am excited to try this I have never even attempted doing velvet paintings before.
