Hey! Its been a while since my last post here so its good to be back

We recently bought a new flat and came up with the idea of transforming one room to a tiki room...
This is what it looked like when we moved in in, very white.

We painted the room and the plan was to keep it like that and just add a bar and some lamps.
But now ill cover one wall with lauhala and bamboo (to begin with). Unfortunaly all these materials
are quite expensive and hard to get in Sweden so its gonna take a while until everythings finished.

Im not gonna do anything about the ceiling, my wife loves it the way it is
(the apartment is built in 1936 and she loves vintage stuff from 40-50s)

The bar in progress

Added some lauhala, tomorrow ill cut some bamboo to frame the matting.

My plan is to cover the walls next to the bar with lauhala, but should i go with some other matting instead?
Since ive already covered the bar in lauhala? Suggestions?

Mahalo!

Just a little Bamboo trim would give the bar a more finished look
Oh and a Tiki Mask in the front maybe?

How fun...I'm sure you will end up adding some hanging lamps to complement that ceiling. The room color is good and looking forward to seeing your finished bar. Keep up the great work.

I covered my bars walls with Lauhala matting, and although it looked great I felt it looked a bit 'new'. So I painted my walls with a matt 'teak' varnish and it gave the Lauhala an aged look. It also gives a bit of contrast.

Also you could try to use a larger weave on the walls than on the bar and that would give a contrast also.

finally some small updates...

"New walls". Had to put plywood on the wall

Wiring for lamps

Putting up the lauhala...
The lauhala was delivered folded. So we decided to let it hang for some time.
Does anybody have some useful hints to make it smoother?

Bear: Thanks! I put an ad in the local newspaper "looking for a woman, must be a professional steamer".

I also tried to iron on a wet towel, worked fine but i guess your way is better... Thanks for the answer!

"New walls". Had to put plywood on the wall

What is the reason for plywood over the the dry wall? Is that to staple the lauhala matting?

MaukaHale: Exactly! The walls isnt drywall, its some kind of plaster... too hard for the staples
