I should also mention that the art show includes velvet paintings from comtemporary painters like Carl Smool to masters like Edgar Leetag. If you are in Seattle on August 15th, come check it out!

VELVET DREAMS at the LAVA LOUNGE on FRIDAY, AUGUST 15.

For a fresh perspective on the much-maligned medium of velvet painting, experience the lure of velour at VELVET DREAMS: Black Velvet Art Invitational. This exhibition examines the velvet genre beginning with its tawdry South Pacific origins and includes recent works by a stellar group of accomplished contemporary artists. The show opens with a festive party on Friday, August 15, the eve of the demise of Elvis - himself the subject of countless velvet masterpieces – and continues through September 1 at the Lava Lounge, 2226 2nd Avenue in Belltown. (206.441.5660).

VELVET DREAMS features the work of the late Edgar Leeteg, widely acknowledged as the modern master of the medium. His raucous exploits in the South Seas were chronicled in James Michener’s story A Rascal in Paradise, and his legendary personae can be characterized as the archetypal male miscreant of the post-war era. His work is the subject of a recent book, Leeteg of Tahiti (Last Gasp of San Francisco), which includes an essay by the renowned Charles Krafft, one of many artists contributing new work to the VELVET DREAMS exhibition. Also on display is a portrait of El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, created by Art Chantry, whose considerable contributions to contemporary graphic design are the subject of Some People Can’t Surf (Chronicle Books). Also featured is a new painting by Joe Newton, who currently serves as Art Director for the Stranger. Cartoonist Ellen Forney, tattoo artist Bandana Mike, painters Shawn Ferris, Buddy Foley, Art Garcia, Jacques Moitoret, Rachel Maxi, Tim Silbaugh, Tim Marsden, Randy McCoy and a host of others display new creations in the exhibition.

The reception on August 15 opens at 9:00 PM with the Northwest premiere of the short documentary film Velvet Dreams. Directed by Maori filmmaker Sima Urale for New Zealand State television, this entertaining look at velvet painting is produced in the film noir fashion of the fifties. It includes a brief interview with curator Larry Reid in the Lava Lounge, and features Charles Krafft, David Price as well as other local luminaries. An amazing assortment of bohemians and dignitaries filmed in exotic locales throughout the South Seas make this lively production enlightening and endlessly amusing.

Tropical mood music will be provided by Lushy, a delicious Seattle lounge combo. (To hear samples visit www.lushy.com). Bawdy burlesque will be performed by the Gun Street Girls, and DJ Lu spins erotic exotica between acts. Drink specials all night featured all night. All this, and a few surprises. No cover charge! 21 and older.

VELVET DREAMS immediately follows the Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo fame) reception at Roq la Rue, 2316 2nd Avenue, making August 15 a happening evening in Belltown. For additional information contact Larry Reid at the numbers above.
