The Atomic Grog now features a new weekly feature, publishing early every Monday, with the latest news and events from around the world of Tiki, concentrating on the U.S. East Coast.

We'll look back at the highlights of the previous week, and look ahead to what's coming up. There's also a list of all the major upcoming events, plus a spotlight on some of our favorite artists, bands/music, Tiki bars, rums/cocktails, and websites.

The first edition (Jan. 12) featured news on ticket sales for The Hukilau, the Polynesian Village Resort's new DVC units, and Paul McGee opening Lost Lake in Chicago. We put a spotlight on Jeff Chouinard (Surf Soul Tiki), Stolen Idols, Latitude 29, and 5 Minutes of Rum. The featured rum and cocktail were Havana Club Anejo 3 Ańos and the Classic Daiquiri.

This week's edition featured updates on The Hukilau, Polynesian Village Resort and Lost Lake, plus news on Miami Rum Festival ticket sales, the return of the Chicago Tiki Tour, and the 40th anniversary of the Walt Disney World opening of Space Mountain and Carousel of Progress.

We also previewed this week's Tiki Mondays With Miller in New York City and Tiki Horror Nights in Miami. There's also info on two Florida events happening this weekend: Revenge of the Tiki IV in Fort Lauderdale and Planet of the Lost Tikis in Indian Harbor Beach. This week's features included Bosko Hrnjak, A Mountain of Crushed Ice, The Tiki Delights, and the new book on The Kahiki. The rum of the week, The Real McCoy 5, was featured in La Floridita Daiquiri.

Cool. I already found one item to pin on my Pinterest page, Luau Cindor. Thanks.

Thank you. It is important to remind people of the grandeur of the Hala Kahiki, it is not mentioned often enough, yet it is one of the most amazing original Tiki temples still in existence.

I remember well my first visit together with Jeff Berry, on my 1996 expedition to photograph the Kona Kai, and the Kahiki in Columbus for the Book of Tiki, and the photo Safari for Tiki Modern in 2003, where James Teitelbaum assisted me with the lighting.

It is simply amazing that this place is still up and running!

(…and I don't wanna hear anything about the drinks being not "craft cocktail" level! )

Hi Hurricane, I don't believe I've seen any mention of The Tiki Hideaway in Charlotte, NC on your blog. It opened in December and has a thread here in the "locating tiki" section. It may not have the celebrity ownership/management of Lost Lake, but it is definitely tiki and deserving of mention. Thanks

Aloha JenTiki,

The Tiki Hideaway was mentioned in the second "Week in Tiki" post as one of the featured "Tiki links of the week". There's a link to a nice story from CharlotteFive.com that I enjoyed. I'll admit, this was the first I'd heard of the bar, but it sounds great. So expect more mentions in the future.

Aloha Sven! I've yet to have the pleasure of immersing myself in the Hala Kahiki, but I'll admit I've been mesmerized by the place since first reading about it and seeing your photos in Tiki Modern. I agree that in this case (and some others), we can overlook any cocktail shortcomings.

Lots of news to report this week:
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/02/09/the-week-in-tiki-feb-9-2015-the-hukilau-website-and-tiki-tower-takeover-tickets-trader-sams-grog-grotto-drinks/

The top story is the latest on The Hukilau, including the new website and tickets now on sale for the Tiki Tower Takeover and cruise with Dawn Wells of ‘Gilligan’s Island.'

The Tiki Tower Takeover features four of the country’s top barmen – Jeff Beachbum Berry (Latitude 29, New Orleans), Martin Cate (Smuggler’s Cove, San Francisco), Paul McGee (Lost Lake, Chicago) and Brian Miller (Tiki Mondays with Miller, New York City) – as they each serve up a cocktail in the revolving Pier Top Lounge on the 17th floor of the Pier 66 hotel on the Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway on Thursday, June 11.

And just announced: The Hukilau will welcome actress Dawn Wells from Gilligan’s Island for a “Three Hour Tour” Cruise on Fort Lauderdale’s inland waterways. Limited to 300 people, the cruise aboard a yacht will include open bar, food, Tiki tunes and more. The event is set for Friday, June 12.

The Hukilau’s new website is now live with complete coverage of the event: http://thehukilau.com

Around the rest of the Tiki world:

* We have lots of details on Modernism Week, as it celebrates 10 years in Palm Springs. The highlight may be a release party for a new Shag print featuring music by The Martini Kings on Friday (Feb. 13).

* In news from last week, Disney gave us a sneak preview of the drink menu at the upcoming Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. There will be at least five new drinks plus more than three others coming over from the Trader Sam’s menu at Disneyland.

* In news from the West Coast, we report on the theft of a Fijian war club at Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco, and the upcoming closing of the Conga Lounge in Oakland.

We also posted a whole lot of links from last week, including video and photos, a story on Montana's Sip 'n Dip Lounge, a bunch of rum links, and more.

In this week's spotlights, we feature:
ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Shag
WEBSITE OF THE WEEK: Zen Tiki Lounge
BAND/MUSIC OF THE WEEK: The Crazed Mugs
TIKI BAR OF THE WEEK: Trader Vic’s, New York City
RUM OF THE WEEK: Koloa Coconut
COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK: Restless Native

Coming next week, coverage of the upcoming "Art of Tiki: A Cocktail Showdown" at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival (featuring Emeril Lagasse, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, Martin Cate, and many others) on Feb. 20, plus the Lost Cocktails of The Mai Kai event on Feb. 21.

Also, hot off the presses, we just found out that The Mai-Kai has been named to the National Register of Historic Places:

More to come!

South Florida appears to be the nexus of the Tiki universe this week ...
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/02/16/the-week-in-tiki-feb-16-2015-tiki-cocktail-showdown-on-south-beach-ukuleles-and-lost-cocktails-at-the-historic-mai-kai/

On Friday, Emeril Lagasse hosts a who's who of Tiki bartenders and VIPs for "The Art of Tiki: A Cocktail Showdown" at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. The showdown will feature eight cocktails from some of the most notable Tiki mixlogists, bars and restaurants from near and far: Lost Lake (Chicago), The Mai-Kai (Fort Lauderdale), Tiki Mondays With Miller (New York City), Frankie’s Tiki Room (Las Vegas), Royal Kona Resort (Hawaii), The Rum Line (Miami Beach), The Broken Shaker (Miami Beach), and Spike Mendelsohn’s upcoming Miami restaurant. Judging the competition will be Lagasse, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry (Latitude 29, New Orleans), Martin Cate (Smuggler’s Cove, San Francisco), and Lynnette Marrero (Diageo rum ambassador; DrinksAt6, New York City). Look for more info and full coverage upcoming on The Atomic Grog.

The Mai Kai hosts special musical guests on Friday and an evening of "lost cocktails" on Saturday. This all comes on the heels of last week's news that the Fort Lauderdale landmark has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Friday's happy hour features Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel, an acclaimed duo who have spent the past two years performing and teaching ukulele at festivals around the world. On Saturday, The Mai-Kai will serve a flight of cocktails that have never appeared on the acclaimed 58-year-old tropical drink menu.

Also upcoming this week in South Florida: A grand opening reception at the new permanent home of the "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History" exhibit; and the 12th annual Polynesian Cultural Festival.

We have more on The Mai-Kai's historic status, plus weekly spotlights on Critiki, Koop Kooper’s Cocktail Nation, and Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas. The rum of the week, Tanduay from the Philippines, is featured in the Shark’s Tooth cocktail.

It’s time for Tiki cocktails and the ever-growing culture that surrounds the movement to get a chance to shine. And there’s no better place for a moment in the sun during February than the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and an event hosted by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.

Here's a full preview of tomorrow night's event, The Art of Tiki: A Cocktail Showdown ...
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2015/02/19/bam-its-tiki-time-at-the-south-beach-wine-food-festival/

The contestants are:
* Lost Lake (Paul McGee)
* The Mai-Kai (Troy Gallant)
* Tiki Mondays With Miller (Brian Miller)
* Frankie’s Tiki Room
* Royal Kona Resort (Jeff Isbister)
* The Rum Line (Rob Ferrara)
* The Broken Shaker (Randy Perez)
* Spike Mendelsohn

There will be Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice winners. Who do you think will come out on top?

Looks like a great event! Are the judges going to swirl, swish and spit the drinks or are they going to go all out and get smashed?
