From the ashes of the Week in Tiki (and the Month in Tiki) rises The Tiki Times. Still ambitious, but more practical, this monthly guide to what’s going on across the world of Tiki culture will hopefully be a definitive resource of where to find special events that touch on topics of interest to many Tikiphiles. You’ll find all the major Tiki festivals, plus smaller gatherings along with events that scratch our itch for rum and cocktails, surf and rockabilly music, mid-century modern design, even Disney. And don’t forget authentic Polynesian culture, the well from which Tiki springs. The biggest will get extended coverage as “spotlight events.” Coming soon: A look ahead at the full year, plus monthly recaps.

I just posted the first monthly calendar for February, including previews of Modernism Week and lots more ...

Very well done, thank you, Hurricane Hayward! You called my attention to one event I hadn't even heard about in my own city.

The latest news on The Hukilau 2017 ...

The Hukilau, the East Coast’s largest and longest-running Tiki weekender, has confirmed an all-new lineup for one of its signature events during the 16th annual festivities in Fort Lauderdale in June. When the acclaimed Tiki Tower Takeover returns to the revolving rooftop ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 for a third straight year, it will feature four new Tiki bar teams and a special master of ceremonies, globetrotting “rum ambassador” Ian Burrell.

Click here to see the new lineup ...
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/02/20/exclusive-the-hukilaus-tiki-tower-takeover-to-feature-rum-ambassador-ian-burrell-international-flair/

The international theme of the Tiki Tower Takeover will carry though to the music as well. While a full lineup and schedule will not be announced for several weeks, one of the headlining bands has already been confirmed: Canadian instrumental surf band The Surfrajettes ...

The full lineup of symposium presenters is still being finalized, but one returning author has already been announced: Tim “Swanky” Glazner will present more fascinating facts and stories that came out of his years of research that resulted in the acclaimed "Mai-Kai: History and Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant." For 2017, Glazner plans something new and special: “The real history from the mouths of those who lived it.” He’ll host a panel discussion featuring important figures from the history of The Mai-Kai and beyond. This once-in-a-lifetime event will let you hear first-hand memories and “tales of the high life in the mid-century” that go beyond the stories in the book. Glazner will also likely be leading special walking tours at The Mai-Kai.

Also returning are Fort Lauderdale artists Tom Fowner and Will Anders, who will offer hands-on symposiums that allow villagers to learn about Tiki art and craftsmanship. And resurfacing again for 2017 is another favorite of villagers at The Hukilau: The special swimshows at The Wreck Bar in the B Ocean Resort by Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid and her pod of aquaticats.

Tiki Tony, The Hukilau’s official artist for 2017, has been hard at work on new designs and merchandise. The California artist has created a dozen different possible Tiki mug concepts, which were posted on a special site. The mugs will once again be crafted and produced by Eekum Bookum. Click here to take a poll and vote for your favorite:
http://sagworks.polldaddy.com/s/what-design-should-become-a-tiki-mug-for-hukilau-2017

Also on tap for 2017 are special rum tastings, both at the Bazaar and at other locations. Rum ambassador Burrell is sure to lend his expertise. Pop-up bars from around the country will also be featured in Friday afternoon’s Rum Island Pool Party, a sequel to last year’s Tiki Road Trip Pool Party. Special guest bars will also be featured in the Friday High Tide event in the Pier 66 Panorama Ballroom.

More updates on The Hukilau 2017 are posted in a new blog, including new symposiums announced, six pop-up bars from across the country confirmed, plus three more headlining bands. The Tiki Tower Takeover is also officially sold out.

Breaking down the news by topic ...

Bars popping up from coast to coast to join The Hukilau
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#bars

In addition to the sold-out Tiki Tower Takeover's all-star lineup of world-class bars (France's Dirty Dick, Italy's Nu Lounge Bar, Chicago's Three Dots and a Dash, New York City's Slowly Shirley), plans call for high-profile Tiki establishments from across the country to mix up cocktails at several special events during The Hukilau. These bars from the eastern and western U.S. were confirmed:

Now on sale: Ian Burrell teaches rum and cocktails, symposiums, arts & crafts
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#symposiums

Tickets to three symposiums plus two arts & crafts classes were made available March 1, including a rum and cocktail history lesson with international rum ambassador Ian Burrell. Here's a rundown on everything that's now on sale:

Symposium: The History of Rum in 10 Cocktails with Ian Burrell ($40) – Friday, June 9, at 2 p.m. History doesn’t need to be boring. The global rum ambassador will take The Hukilau’s villagers on a journey through time via 10 classic cocktails.

Symposium: The Mai-Kai’s Untold Stories with Tim “Swanky” Glazner ($20) – Friday, June 9, at noon. Join the author of Mai-Kai: History and Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant as he leads a panel discussion with current and former employees of The Mai-Kai.

Symposium: Nautical Tiki with Mike Skinner ($20) – Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m. The noted Tiki researcher, historian and presenter will share his research into this integral part of Polynesian Pop history.

Will Anders presents a class on how to carve a Tiki from a bar of soap in the Pier Top Ballroom during The Hukilau 2016.

Craft class: Weave Your Own Palm Hat with Tom Fowner ($20) – Friday, June 9, at 10 a.m.
Craft class: Carve Your Own Pendant with Will Anders ($20) – Saturday, June 10, at 10 a.m.

Three bands join entertainment lineup, more to come
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#bands

Three new bands – two from Florida and one all the way from Brazil – were confirmed in separate announcements over the past several weeks. They join the previously announced Canadian instrumental surf band The Surfrajettes as the major “out-of-town” bands on the schedule. Here’s a look at the newly added groups:

The Dead Rocks – This trio of stylish gents from Brazil has been tearing up the surf scene for more than 14 years, taking their spin on classic instrumental rock worldwide.

The Mermers – This four-piece from Gainesville, Fla., emerged in late 2015, filling a void by specializing in the darker side of surf.

The Stolen Idols – How often do you hear classic exotica, performed live as it should be – with full instrumentation and reverence for the original arrangements?

Schedule still in the works, but here’s what we know now
Organizers have said the daily schedule will follow roughly the same format as last year. Based on all of the announced performers and info on TicketLeap, we were able to map out this tentative schedule to help those who are planning their hotel and ticket purchases:
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#schedule

New Tiki mug design selected
The Hukilau’s villagers have answered the call and picked a favorite to become the official 2017 mug, designed by Tiki Tony and produced by Eekum Bookum. Results of an online poll of a dozen different designs were tallied. Which was the winner?
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#mug

Daily tickets, rooms still available
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/03/10/the-hukilau-2017-updates-symposiums-on-sale-pop-up-bars-announced-plus-more/#tickets

Weekend passes are selling fast – especially those on the top end of the price range that are more limited. Saturday night dinner reservations at The Mai-Kai are also filling up fast. The first dinner show seating sold out as of Feb. 22. Also, don’t forget to book your room at Pier 66 while The Hukilau’s special rate is still available.

Stay tuned for new announcements, including the swim shows and additional symposiums/tastings.
