Can anyone shed light on the what kind of drink this refers to: "scotch and". This was asked for by someone in the William Castle film "House on Haunted Hill"(1958 version). Also does anyone know of tiki drinks made with soda water dispensed from a soda siphon?

Scotch and soda was a popular form of highball in the 50s so it was probably that, not a tiki drink. There are several tiki drinks that have seltzer but none have scotch.

If I remember correctly, Donn Beach said he started making and serving rum drinks because rum was readily available after prohibition and it was cheap. That appears to be why he was so obsessed with mixing rum cocktails versus any other booze. Come to think of it, there are not many true tiki drinks that use anything other than rum. There is some gin in a Singapore Sling, but that's all I can think of right now.

Au contraire! Trader Vic's "Starboard Light" (the only drink served in the green Starboard Light tumbler) is scotch, lemon juice, honey, egg white & passion fruit.
It's 'sister' drink, the "Port Light" is identical, but made with bourbon and served in the red Port Light tumbler.
The "Blue Hawaii" is definitely a tiki drink, and it's made with vodka (not to be confused with the "Blue Hawaiian", a rum drink...)
