Last year's surprise hit, the Bay Area's award winning Hula company returns for two performances. Directed by Irvine Foundation Fellow Patrick Makuakane, this company has been hailed for its commitment to the traditions of Hawaii while creating a new look for hula - hula mua. This distinctive new style builds on the traditional foundations of the dance but is danced to a full range of non-traditional music forms, from opera to techno. This is a "not-to-be-missed" program and will open with a presentation of the traditional hula and chant by one of Los Angeles' leading Halaus, Hula Halau O Kamuela Elau.
