Jackson overexposure: TV feels heat
...

(CNN) -- The revealing of Janet Jackson's breast during the Super Bowl halftime show has had far-reaching consequences for the broadcast television networks
...

The NFL has replaced one of Timberlake's 'N Sync band mates, JC Chasez, in Sunday's Pro Bowl halftime show. The new halftime plan is for a Hawaiian extravaganza featuring hula dancers, drummers, conch shell blowers and local singers, the AP reports.

Is this the most stupid thing yet? PLEASE!

Or what about uninviting Janet Jackson to the Grammy awards show, but not Justin Timberlake. Uh, weren't they kind of BOTH involved?

This whole incident so typifies our archaic and hypocritical mindset in this country. Stone the whore for luring her innocent male victim into her web of deception, not unlike the sirens of Greek lore tempting the sailors to run their ships on the rocks. Janet Jackson is a very talented and sexually charged performer that made the mistake of doing the right thing at the wrong time with the wrong person. I wish she would have done a duet with Kid Rock and bared both breasts! But that's just my two coconuts worth.

Oh NO... he's totally innocent, that bustier just exploded off her chest like the fembots bullets. It's her fault the bra came off. How do you wear lace over one of those sunburst things anyway? Seems like it would get tangled up. His family is disgraced over the entire thing. YOU MUST PITY HIM. heh...
Don't you just love her pathetic looking "I'm sorry" makeover/under?

Umm...

They both suck as performers, and they (should) share the blame for this desperate grasp for attention. Justin Timberlake is one of the all time biggest poseurs that pop music has given us, and Janet Jackson is a sorry excuse for a Las Vegas dinner theater performer, as are Britney and Christina. Mitzy Gaynor was better at it. Leave the whipping out to Iggy Pop, Jim Morrison, etc. There's a time and a place for performers to take their stuff out, and it's not the Super Bowl.

Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, Ronnie Spector, Stevie Nicks and Aretha Franklin never showed their tits (even though some may wanna see) because they don't have to. Are they 'sexually charged performers'? That's up to you.

By the way, wouldn't it be nice to once again see a female performer actually perform music without all the soft porn? Alicia Keys, Michelle Branch, and that gang sort of fill that gap, but don't have the impact that say Aretha Franklin (did) does. When was the last time you can think of a female performer that has come along like Aretha, with that kind of passion based soley on their MUSICAL talent and performance? Even Janis Joplin. For the carefree hippie that she was, she kept the sex in check.

Norah Jones ... great talent, and I like her music, but personally I'd rather listen to Aretha if I have a choice. If we're talking REALLY sexy, however, I'll take the older Julie London stuff any day. I've had a crush on her since I was about seven years old. I'm not aware that she ever bared her breasts either ...

Yeah, I guess Norah Jones is a pretty decent example. After I posted my rant, Lauryn Hill came to mind as well. I guess my point is it's hard to find legit performers like those mentioned. Aretha, etc. have become icons and for good reason. Even though there are a few cool female performers out there these days, I don't see them becoming icons, but who thought back in the 80s that Pat Benatar would become sort of iconic. With good reason also. It's just that those of the Britney ilk get all the attention and it's annoying.

Cybertiki...yeah how could I forget to mention Julie London. Very classy and sexy. I've just recently grabbed a few of her LPs at flea markets and such. In fact I found a mint, and I mean MINT copy of 'Julie Is Her Name' for $1 at the Salvation Army on Broward Blvd. down there in Ft. Lauderdale.

After I posted my rant I went to bed & woke up the next morning wondering what I was thinking! So much fo righteous indignation. The most impressive, talented and entertaining female performers I've seen live didn't have to take off their clothes either as I recall - Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Debra Harry & Nico all put on great shows that were better than anything I've seen lately (but then, I don't get out much anymore).

Shipwreckjoey.

After seeing all those great female performers, you don't need to get out. I've only seen Patti Smith, everybody else you saw was before my (adult) time. I should have got out to see Peggy Lee befor eshe checked out. Which reminds me..if Astrud Gilberto ever plays again, I should probably see her. But then again, I saw Koko Taylor a few years back. I think that makes up for something.

If I need to see real women...and I mean REAL women take off their clothes, I'll go rent a Russ Meyer movie.

Leeann Rimes has a killer voice AND she doen't need to undress or show her belly button/ass/tits. SHE is a real star! So is Charlotte Church. Heavenly voice.

And I'm not talking pop stars, Leeann Rimes does Country....Charlotte Church does.....Heaven

Speaking of country singers...Tanya Tucker is my fave. I was channel surfing a few years back and tuned into a country music awards show just in time to catch her doing a duet with...LITTLE RICHARD!!! She tore it up. Not that that was my first exposure to her music. I used to frequent a downtown bar in the late '70's a coupla blocks from where my band rehearsed that had Tanya on the jukebox. Pumped quite a few quarters into that machine. Other female artists on my "must see" list: Annie Lennox, Sinead O'Conner, Aretha (natch) & Sade (check out her performance on the movie Absolute Beginers).
donhonyc- Russ Meyers is a classic. His movies are one-of-a-kind. I don't see his boob obsession as exploitation, but more of a celebration of his fetish where everybody has a good time and goes home happy...not unlike a good burlesque show. John Waters devotes a whole chapter to Russ and Herschell Gordon Lewis entitled "{two Masters" in his autobiography Shock Value, including an interview with him and (then) wife Kitten Natividad (Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens).

Shipwreckjoey-

I hear you on the Russ Meyer. The thing about his approach is that he does in fact celebrate, not exploit. There is nothing faster and wilder than a great Russ Meyer flick, not even two GTOs dukin' out on the strip on a Saturday night. The praises of Mr. Meyer cannot be enough. He is truly an unsung hero of American Cinema. I guarantee you...all the great American directors of our time, Scorcese, Lynch, Coppola, you name it. They all love him, and owe him. I had the good fortune to go and meet Russ at his house in Palm Desert, CA and interview him a few years ago. That was not my initial quest for going to his home, but we did our best and got a great interview, and I will never forget it (there is a whole other story t this) Aside from his subject matter, the man is a true master of his craft. He was a cameraman in the army signal corp during WWII and knows how to use a camera. He was on the beach at Normandy filming!!!!!! In his words: "I loved the war, I didn't want it to end". He told me this.

He is probably on of the most colorful (for lack of a better word) people I have met in my life.

Should we start a thread on Russ Meyer?
