Formikahini, Thanks for the kind words. I will reconsider not putting up my photos. I guess if your saying what you have is one thing and its another thats wrong. I have read and collected everything I can on ed roth and other famous pinstrippers, I dont feel I if I stripe a car in their style, I am copying but I am the first to say who I was influenced by and always try to add my own personal touch.

Doesn't the statute run out after 50 years (or was it 40)? The songs should all be public domain by now, I'd imagine.

Well, if that's the case......... I think you missed the point. Anyway, as I stated before, I'm not really interested in being a part of this, just wanted to throw out some ideas. You know, I don't care what anyone says about you guys, I think you're allright!!! Take care of yourselves, it's a big, bad world out there. Feel free to e-mail me next time you see one of my auctions. To curse my name, of course. Anyway, you're all going to Hell for worshipping false idols.

Author's life plus 50 years if I remember correctly. I think they're trying to extend it to 75.

If you are talking copyrights, I just had to do a paper on copyrights! Copyright protection expires 50 years after your death in the US. In the UK, the copyright lasts for the life of the author and 70 after their death.

I hope this helps!

Wow…
Some of you guys know me by now and those who do may have figured out I have rather strong feelings about the fair and equitable treatment of artists. At the start of this thread I thought it was going to be about ethics in art, not about running down a particular person. I have to reserve judgment on Lars until such a time as I have seen first hand what all the fuss is about. But frankly Lars is not of much real concern to me right at this particular moment, except for the fact that he seems intent on making snide comments and insulting people for no reason other than the fact they disagree with him. Personally I think this is poor form, but hey that’s me I don’t expect Lars really cares what I think. I truly wish that we (TC’er) could discuss ethics in art in a neutral forum without going after perceived offenders. Now I know I bear some guilt in pointing fingers at people who I perceive as unfairly taking advantage of artists, and yes it is a heartfelt subject for me, BUT… if we could rise above this sort of finger pointing and turn the discussion toward the offences rather than particular offenders we all stand to benefit. People who are new to art have their hands full trying to develop hand skills and if you more seasoned guy will think back I’m certain many of you will remember that this was a big task. A great many artist, particularly in this genre, do not have the benefit of a formal arts education and this is a distinct disadvantage when it comes to areas of art not directly associated with the actual production of art, peripheral issues if you will. Without training it may take a long time to sort out the peripheral issues, I know it did for me. Rather than attack new artists why not try to take the high road? Lets not scare the bejesus outta guys like RodeoTiki, (even if he is Canadian, man he can’t help that) rather we can mentor newcomers. This does not mean a one on one relationship with everyone who wants to try their hand at Tiki art. But if TC creating Tiki forum had things like nonjudgmental threads on subjects like ethics they would have a point of reference. This is not to say we all agree or have the same standards, but if we could talk about stuff like this in a reasonable manner we may find that we could begin to form a consensus. I thought I was coming home to write on a different topic not realizing the thread had so degraded over the course of a single day. I missed the weekend as it was equinox and I had sacred things to attend to, (not the least of which was Idolatry, and a few more “deadly’s” just for good measure).

Lars may be a lost cause but at least he is out in the open, word will get back to Shag or people who have legitimate marketing rights and if the offence is a real one and affects the marketability or market share of true shag art then I imagine Lars will be the proud recipient of a cease and desist letter. In due course he may be required to make reparation to aggrieved parties and the works themselves may subject to seizure. But as I said I haven’t seen the offending work.

I’m glad to see this thread has not been shut down, on the other hand I would be glad to see it fade away, and start anew as a positive, if sometimes painful, topic.

None of us has gone our whole life without ethical missteps, I seem to have had more than my share, and I would be glad to share them with you guys, (not in this thread) and tell you how I resolved them. I’d be interested to hear if you think I came out of ‘em without damage to others or my integrity, I’m not always sure if I right my wrongs or not but hey, I try, and sometimes a little advice can help steer a guy in the right direction. Whether A guy goes down that path or not is another story, but I like to try even if it means I need to ask for a little help now and again. And if someone asks me, (and all to often when they don't) I’m glad to point them in the direction I believe is the best path, in the end we all make our own decisions.

I'm really loving this thread... we should all get together for a drink sometime.

Hey I was just thinking, I wonder if a hundred years from now if art collectors will be trying to tell the subltle differences between a Shag and a Lars?

I'm off to the tiki bar now...
Cheers!

Ahh BB to quote my favorite band of all time, Ministry.
"Adults create the world children live in. Juvenile delinquency is always rooted in adult deliquency, and in this process parents play the key role. When children grow up among adults who refuse to recognize anything that is fine and good or worthy of respect..."

"So What" Ministry, the "Mind is a terrible thing to taste" AND "Incase you didn't feel like showing up {live}.
Al sampled from Ed Wood's "The Violent Years"
Got the two on CD and the Movie on VHS.

And you are right about the Porno for Pyros (Perry's..jane's addiction.. side band)

Oh and I make up my own style for the record... many are from.. ahem.. altered states (who Ministry sampled from as well. The movie "Altered States" not from me)

PM me if you want more Ministry talk.

Lars, there is a difference between collecting idols and worshiping them. I know of a preist who collects occult items, many from my house. Which reminds me, I need to get my books back from him.
BTW, I like your Shaq Style paintings. To tell you the truth, the only thing you don't do that he does is the monochromatic scheme. from one artist to another, I wish you luck and hope "Shag" doesn't get a tiki up his backside for people copying his style. It happened with R. crumb and Mr. Natural's "Keep on Trucking" pictures. Personally I like the abstract form.
I respect your work because you have talent. Not many people can paint, draw or spell. Keep it up.

Figured I'd mention that b4 the thread was put in lock down. Damn I'm Drunk...and it's Monday.

Oh, brother...I just caught this post...funny how much of a shitstorm an assertive question can bring on. Even funnier how easy it is to tell the men from the boys by how defensive the boys get all of a sudden when their jig is up. Here's a word....S T Y L E. You've either got your own or you don't. S T Y L E. Just keep repeating that. You know who you are. Now stop whining, pick up a chisel or a paintbrush or a sculpting tool or whatever you do and pop that sonofabitch like a shoeshine rag until YOU become YOU and people can spot YOUR stuff instantly. Like James Brown once said "I got mine....I don't worry 'bout his..."

Lars, my point isn't that you are copying Shag, it's that you say nothing is original. Shag must be original or who would say you were copying him. I never said anything bad about it.

My problem with what you have said is that not one person on this forum has done anything original. I find that to either be a purely offensive statement or uneducated.

My point is, I can name a number of artists here whose style and material is distinctly their own: original.

The "going to Hell" thing was a joke. Sorry, my humor. I am not a Christian, and meant no offense to anyone who is. Why, some of my best friends..........

Not me, but I'm familiar with the area. I'll have to check it out.

Just to clarify one thing, I don't mean to disrespect, or insult, anyones work. As I stated before, I enjoy and appreciate some of what I see. I am in awe of Flounder's work, absolutely beautiful!! Gecko, outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!! I'm sure that there's much more. I was just stating my opinion, and stepping up as one of those people who are part of what some see as a problem. I've got nothing to prove to anyone. I do what I do, and I enjoy it.

Allright, now I'm leaving.

Really.

Here I go.

I'm really going.

For real.
