Tiki Oasis IV… Holly Mother of Vishnu! What a weekend! This was our first Oasis and most definitely will not be our last. I can not even begin to express to you all how impressed we were with the event. Although we always enjoy the hard work of the staff at the Caliente Tropics, you should all be commended for going above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel that aloha spirit!

Friday: I had spent most of the week and all day Friday packing the car—fully stocked bar, check, vintage tiki bathing suits, check, and so on. I got the call around 5:30 PM from Jay, “Honey, I’m going to be late.” Of all the days in the world to work late, not this Friday, PLEASE! Anyway, he got home at 8:00 PM and we were on the road. Tiki tunes ablaze, the time past quickly enough and we arrived sometime around 10:30 PM only to be greeted at the front desk with a warm friendly smile and a free room upgrade! A pretty good birthday present for Jay, I thought. But we had missed the performances and costume contest…major bummer… but wait, “Who’s that in the dark over there? OH YAY! It’s Floratina!” Apparently we were just in time for the Zombie Taste Off!!! After sampling all the brews I developed a quick buzz… and so began the drinking… A stop in to Hut 135 to say hello to Al and Shelly proved almost deadly with a few fantastic drinks and the company of our friends Rebecca and Dave. Now, the night gets foggy here, but I know we met a bunch of new friends and had one hell of a night.

Saturday: Uhg… What time is it? Everything is spinning. Where is that light coming from? Need aspirin. GOD! I knew there was something I forgot to pack. I, unfortunately, was the “less sick” of the two and so Jay sent me out into the blazing Palm Springs sun on aspirin recon. Stumbling around and looking like I had been run over by a truck, I found a lovely couple emerging all bright eyed and busy tailed from their hut. I explained my horrible predicament and got a perky response, “Oh, too many Funky Monkeys! Take as many aspirin as you want.” Because I never got your names, THANK YOU SO MUCH. DJ California Kid was well on his way to setting the mood for Saturday… Wow, this was going to be so much fun! We shopped, we drank, we mingled, we swam; REPEAT… This went on for hours. We participated in Cherry Capri’s Tiki Origami Class that bore out the cutest mini origami hula shirt as the fruit of our labor. We then took a side trip to the M Modern Gallery for some high brow tiki art. Great work on display. We made a quick stop at Warehouse Music for a CD of traditional Hawaiian chants and love songs to ad some badly needed diversity to our hut’s soundtrack. By the way, I just have to note that we looked really funny in our vintage tiki duds tooling around in the modern world. Back at the Caliente we blended right in and continued to enjoy the music and the carrying on. I also have to say that the Reef Bar looked fantabulous and having the Purple Orchid at the Oasis was a real treat for everyone. When the sun went down the festivities really got going. The Fisherman, King Kukulele and APE put on a killer show. Eating our fajitas on the grass made the concert that much more enjoyable. Jay and I were lucky enough to get a quick photo with Ginger Goldmine just before she went on stage. I literally had to pinch myself to make sure it was all real (OK, maybe to also check my rum to blood ratio). Vintage Girl’s costume was amazing. How many bananas was that anyway? Then there was the Al & Shelly Hut 135 Party. The drumming, the singing, the tiki phone, Al’s Paku Paku’s—It was sublime. Yeah, so the hot tub conversation at 4:30 AM on adult prams was a bit off... sorry for my ramblings. 5:00 AM—Pass Out.

Sunday: Wake up from coma sleep at 12:00 Noon… wait… Check Out!!! Damn… what was that Floratina was telling us about calling the desk? Ask for a late check out! Thank you to the Caliente staff for pushing it back to 2:00. Also somebody offered us some kind of magic hang over cure the night before. Whatever it was, it worked. Surprisingly clear headed, we sadly cleaned out our room, packing away all our tiki treats and our happy little bar. We bought a couple of last minute gifts for the folks back home and then laid in the pool for the rest of the afternoon. The Reef Bar provided us with a nice flow of Mia Tias as we said our goodbyes to all of our new friends! It was great to meet and hang out with you Joe. We look forward to that Disney trip this summer. Before we headed out of Palm Springs, we had a great rib dinner at the Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill. The architecture of that place is phenomenal. We left Palm Springs very late and hit every bad patch of traffic possible. Thankfully we had the Fisherman’s CD (thanks for signing it guys!) to get us home. Our little LA apartment has never looked so lack-luster… At least we have the memories (and pictures where the memory fails)…

To all the folks from Tiki Central: Thank you for making our first Tiki Oasis so special. You are all such great people. Jay had a rock star birthday. We’ll definitely be back next year. ALOHA!

I forgot to mention as I wrote my first post that the bar looks amazing! Ben and Al have turned the place into a legitimate tiki bar. It was a pleasure playing in there too. A big mahalo to everyone that stuck around and watched us, we had a blast.

Z Girl gave us the 411 about the shower scenario--gees, I'm not a prude, BUT even I would have been taken aback by some strange woman wanting use the shower. It had all the makings of a bad porno or a good girl fight.

So yes, I was forewarned! We were all packed in like sardines in Room 135, so when we spotted the Shower Girl Trio coming down, we promptly closed the door--double checked the peep hole--door man kept her going for a while, "Sorry, we've reached maximum capacity", "What's the secret password". It was pretty funny seeing the look of utter shock--on her face! It was that you can't deny me entry--I'm entitled look.

And to the CD snatcher--you are our hero! We will NEVER NEVER--even under torture or threat of torture give up your identity!

On another note, everything at the Caliente Tropics was top-notch, the entertainment, the vendors, the drinks, the bartenders, the guests, the hospitality of all the TCers, that opened up their rooms for free booze, conversation and ooooh new dresses (thanks Humu2) It was great! Incidentally, my room was no competition--but I too had a full bar going, next year, you the lot of you will hafta give us a little visit.

I think the Zombie Tasting was fun and went pretty smoothly--we now know what kinks to work out for Zombie Tasting II at the Oasis V! Thanks so much for all those that participated in mixing, conceived the idea, those who helped--too many people (TikiPug, for crowd control; MonkeyMan, for ballot collecting and tip jar requests; Tikibelle, the unofficial/official ballot counter) Gees, too too many to thank! You know who you are!

It was so nice seeing old friends, matching faces to handles, making new friends! As I was told this morning, we need a vacation from our vacation--it was really tough going back to the daily grind this morning.

This whole "party dance mix" thing is a hoot. I think next year we ought to have a theme to the 135 party being something like "tiki dance party." ----- And then let's all go to random rooms and take showers.

And for the comment . . . "It had all the makings of a bad porno or a good girl fight."
Hummm, for that I would have let her play her CD.

I bet Cherry Capri could whip her ass!

The Reef bar looked great, the drinks were good and reasonably priced......The Smokin Menehunes........smoked! I vote they play the main stage next year. This was our first Oasis and we had a good time. Unfortunately my meds and the booze had me out like a light by 11:00 both nights so we missed a lot of the fun (thanks for the invite Al) and didn't get a chance to talk to everyone. The bands and vendors were great as were the staff and our room. Schedule permitting.....we're in for V.

At last,
After staying at the Caliente Tropics in 2001 and hearing from Casey that we just missed a great event by a couple of months, after a 2002 trip couldn't be extended to include the Oasis II, and not being able to go in 2003...We made it to our first Oasis.
The event was just perfect. Easy to get to (just 2-3 hours from SD), perfect location, good weather, well organized schedule and activities, great performances, tons of quality merchandise, and most important - great people to spend the time with!
I'm still recovering from the sleep depravation, but it was all well worth it.
Can't wait for next year.
So - thanks to Otto & Babydoe, Casey and the CT staff, Dave, Rebbeca & the PO staff, King Kukulele, Al & Shelly (for hosting people at 135), Cheekygirl and the Zombie taste off bartenders, Monkeyman (for the photo board), the bands (especialy Fisherman Trio, Ape, Mai Kai Gents, and the Smoking Menehunes), Bamboo Ben and Crazy Al for the Reef bar work, Cherry Capri (for the Origami shirt class that we missed, but saw the end results), Weird Uncle Tiki for the Uke camp, and all the TC people that we got to meet and got to know better.

And Casey, the only thing that could be improved is maybe to try to get the ice machines to stay full...other than that, it was great!
Poly pop and ShipwreckJoey, thanks for the compliments on the drink, it was fun mixing and getting some more people to taste it.

Mahalo, see you at the coming events, and of course, next Oasis.

Ran

Coming from Minnesota for our second Tiki Oasis, we decided to catch the Coachella Music Festival the weekend before and had one of the best vacations ever.
Thanks to Otto and everyone else involved in this event.
My credit cards need to be cut up with all the concert shirts, cool retro furniture, and of course Tiki carvings and Tiki everything bought over the nine days in Palm Springs.
We even met people from Mpls. at the MModern gallary this year. Plus, two people from North Dakota--Midwest representing.
Can't wait for next year.
Oh, the Caliente ruled this year.

ohhhhh, now I understand why they asked me if I wanted to take a shower, when I walked into Dr. Z's room, looking for mr. pineapple...
What a great weekend, we brought so much loot back, (not your glasses, I swear dr. z, the pineapples may accidentally sip from the wrong drink, but we don't steal We're putting several vendors children though college or othodontia...
best buy of the weekend is our new pineapple bar! woohoo, can't wait to mix some cocktails! So many great moments, we'll post pictures as soon as we get the car unpacked...

After talking with Z girl about the "BoneGirl" incident, I don't think the "Bad Porno" was ever going to come to fruation. But It sure seemed that a "good girl fight" was to be on the agenda. Z girl was pissed, and now I understand why. Hey!!?? Have we come up with yet another event for next year!!?? Tiki mud wrestling!!?? "Zgirl" vs. "Bonegirl" and "KingKuk" vs. "The Fisherman bass player"!! WoooHoooo!!

Wow!! What a weekend, Otto and Babydoe sure know how to treat you right. They really did an incredible job and its an honor for me to be part of the Oasis and Tiki News family. The brand new Reef Bar is beautiful, my crown is off to Bamboo Ben and Crazy Al, and thanks to Casey at the Tropics for keeping it alive. Thanks to Suicide Sam for the video of our rap battle with the Fisherman Trio. Floratina deserves a round of applause for lending her inflatable bed to the Fisherman "Duo" (who were locked out of their room and stayed with the King) That might help explain a little of my RAP RANT. It was great to see the East coast represented at the Oasis finally. The Fisherman sat in on Iuka Grogg's Ukulele Fantasy Camp on Sunday, he played a makeshift vibrophone made out of cups and beat them with two Tiki Farm swizzle sticks. Great Job Mr. Grogg! I want to thank Shelley Knepper for her invaluable support and creative know how in creating a monster for the Friday Night Sci-Fi Monster Attack, also a big mahalo goes to Richard and Kris in room #228 ("the Monster's Lair") and to Crazy Al and Iuka Grogg who played the Spacemen Bill and Bob. And to you TikiBob, I hope you enjoyed the Tiki Phone as much as Lane from Ape, he was singing up a storm. Anyhow, if you want to know where the best party is, just follow the police, John Q. Law always knows where the party is, I just follow him to ground zero and watch the fireworks...Room 135! Room 135! Room 135! I had a great talk with Frank Novicki, I missed Shag this year for the first time, and I have one last thing to say, "SVEN TIKI WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?!"

PS I hereby officially accept the challenge to mud wrestle the bassplayer of the Fisherman Trio...to the death.

"the Monster's Lair" heh heh.

After perusing the 135 tape, I noticed that the participatory music died down for a bit. Then I realized that King had left the hut. Then the musical cacophony started up again - guess who was back in the room?
